Egr Fault On My 1Ad-Ftv (2008 2.0 D-4D)

Hey all,

Last friday there was a strange bang (a little like a balloon popping) whilst I was driving and suddenly my 2008 Avensis D4D 2.0 had all the lights on the dash and it was like driving in limp mode - no metallic noise at all.

I pulled over, called my garage and they said to drive it slowly to them (around 20 miles away) which I did...

They looked at the fault reader and it diagnosed an EGR fault. They removed the EGR unit, cleaned it (as it was 'Coked Up') and refitted - costed £87 which I was more than happy with as I expected a knackered EGR at £200+ etc etc...

I've read people blank the EGR unit out completely but I don't know if this can be done on my engine (1AD-FTV) and what is the benefit of doing this on a car?
