07 Rav4 Petrol

Hi, Just joined the Toyota owners club, not sure if I'm posting in the right place but here goes anyway.I've just purchased a 07 rav 4 2.0lt Petrol.A couple of problems seem to have occurred since the test drive, the first thing seems to be that the clutch is strange it's like it's slipping but not if you know what I mean the engine seems to keep revving for a short while when clutch is depressed ?. The second thing is a slight whine from somewhere, when driving along if you ease off the accelerator the whine stops and starts again if you depress the accelerator again ? Any help very much appreciated.

If the engine revs stay up when dipping the clutch then that seems to be a normal characteristic of the vvti engine - mines done the same since I got it 18 months ago, and if you search the forum a few people have commented on it.

I've also noticed a fair amount of transmission whine in mine (a 2008 petrol) especially under 30mph - mine has a super low mileage (31k) and again, it seems to just be the nature of these cars - if you had the diesel you probably wouldn't notice the whine over the diesely clatter!

Thanks for the reply,do you think the whine is anything to worry about as I've only got three months warranty other forums say there should be no whining or humming noises for the drive train as this indicates a problem (www.samarins.com/reviews/rav4_06_ 2.html)

Its difficult to say without hearing the noise, but I do get transmission whine on mine at lower speeds - and always have. If yours is a higher mileage it could be more of an issue. If you're getting any other noises (clonks etc) it might be a concern.

I've noticed transmission whine on a few cars over the last few years, but I suspect its partly down to the (petrol) engines becoming smoother and better noise reduction elsewhere.

Just been out for thirty mile run (in the Rav) and whine is there in every gear after about 1500 revs,it sounds as if its coming from just under the bulk head in the middle, do you think changing transmission oils would help ?.Mileage is 62,000 no knocks or clonks just whining.

Have you tried to put a long screwdriver on the alternator to see if the noise is coming from there ?

Might be worth asking a friendly local mechanic to have a listen, it might well be within normal boundaries. Isn't the gearbox oil supposed to be for life, although changing it wouldn't do any harm.

I went for a drive in 08 2.0lt xtr (41,000 miles) yesterdaythe whine was in that too, so I assume that it must be something we will have to put up with. The engines are so quite !

Sounds like mine then so I guess its typical. I'm never sure if the whine is from the gearbox, prop or diff but it sounds more from the front.

It's never changed in the last 21k miles I've done, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will hold out for another 80k or so!

I'm going to find a auto to drive next to see if that does it,because I feel that It's the gear box that's whining.

Let us know if its any different, I would guess an auto will sound quite a bit different anyway.

My 2006 Rav4 2.0 petrol does both of what you are asking about. Had car 2 years it had 63k on the clock when bought now has 78k on the clock. Same symptoms so I would say it's normal. Try changing gear slowly and you'll notice the revs drop before you change gear. It's something to do with emissions if I remember...but crap design if you ask me, none of the other cars we have owned have ever done this.

It's the old engine as well from the Rav4 2 so don't expect it to be latest technology! I can live with it revving when changing gear but the whine is a PITA. Shame really, amazing car otherwise.

I'm going to find a auto to drive next to see if that does it,because I feel that It's the gear box that's whining.

The 4.3 auto is a CVT box and is very refined - much, much better than any other CVT of the time. I test drove one a while back and I couldn't tell the difference from my 4.2 autos (whose boxes are sublime).

If you test a 4.3 petrol auto, all you should hear is the engine; the box should be virtually silent.

By the way, have you checked the oil levels in the box (and diff & transfer box)? Also you need to ensure that you are using the correct grades of oil in the units as they are very sensitive to viscosity. Wrong oil can cause excess wear which can = gear whine.

It would be worth checking with Mr. T for the correct grades and then have the box, diff & TB oils drained & replaced with the correct stuff.

Good luck.

  • 2 months later...

I bought my rav4 today from Scotland, I also notice this whine from 35-50mph and then like a drone sound when going steep at around 75-80+mph

if anyone could shed any light it would be much appreciated...or does anyone know a rav4 specialist in the Manchester/Stockport area, thanks

RRG Toyota (Macc, Altrincham, Salford Quays) have a good reputation among some previous members on here. I've used them in the past myself for LC & RAVs and they're nice people to deal with.

I took the Rav4 to a transmission specialist who diagnosed a crown wheel and pinion noise. The Dealer who I'd bought the car from agreed to pay, thank goodness as it cost just under a grand. I also had the clutch done while the gearbox was out and I stood the cost for that, which was just over two hundred quid. The car now drives great with no noise.
