I have a 1996 Toyota Carib 4x4 automatic. It has recently started making
a clonking noise (coming from the back) when I take my foot off the
gas. This used to only happen when I changed down into 2nd or 1st but
now happens when I'm in D or OD.

Should I be worried/robbing a bank?

Anti roll bar bushes. Get it on a ramp and wind some duck tape around bar then replace bushes on top.

The bushes will appear solid when you pull them about but they aren't!

Unless the original bushes are really knackered don't buy new ones- in my experience the new ones are rarely tight enough. They need to be murder tight!
