Hi first post having just had my new aygo delivered last week (lease scheme through work 3 miles on the clock when it came off the lorry) just needed a small car to run back and forward to work, owned a Yaris verso a few years back so not a major petrol head!

I've found the engine very noisy at low revs, so much so it's been called 'growler' by my wife. It is much noisier than her diesel qashqai.

Almost sounds like the exhaust is blowing. Fairly sure the car I test drove wasn't this noisy.

As its a lease car, I havent had any details on servicing etc sent through but the delivery driver said just take it to the nearest dealer. So before I do that just wondered whether this is a normal thing for a new Aygo?

Thanks for help

The Aygo uses a 3 cylinder 1.0 litre engine - whereas the Yaris Verso was 4 cylinder, as is the Qashqai. Both of these will have a smoother engine note than the Aygo. At lower revs the Aygo has the typical 3 cylinder thrum and sounds quite growly - as do other cars in this class such as the Up/Mio/Citigo.The Yaris 1.0 litre also uses the same engine, as do, of course, the 1.0 litre versions of the C1 and 108.

I agree with Frostyballs but I have noticed that my 64 plate Aygo sounds much rougher than my 12 plate did. As a mechanic myself I am a bit concerned so will have a chat with the dealer when I get home from my daughters wedding which is happening today.

Happy days then best thing to do is to let the dealer check it out. Don't want gas in the cab.

Stand 2 cars the same next to each other you will know then if if it's growler or pussycat.

I drive a 2014 mk1 Aygo and had a courtesy X play Aygo in November when mine went in for its winter tyre swap. If anything they have really improved the noise at low revs; I was crawling along in traffic for a bit pulling out of the garage and noise was considerably less.

I've got a service coming up next month so will hopefully have another X play courtesy to drive.
