St182 Uneven Running

Hi folks

My ST182 (1991 Gen.5 celica 2.0GT) has started to run slightly unevenly. I went down to Essex over the weekend to pick some wheels up, steady run 70ish all the way. It does not get thrashed. It uses a little oil now as well (about 1l/1000 miles)

At low revs (<3K) if you gently apply the throttle it runs unevenly for a couple of seconds and picks up from then on. It is slightly concerning.

I think the camblelt may have gone slack and altered the running.

Its currently approaching 147K and the cambelt was changed at 105K. Its due for a change now but I was hoping I could wait a couple of months (only do about 200 miles/month on average now).

I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem and what caused it. I think Im gonna book it in for a service and tuneup

Cheers guys,

David

tuning a car with worn cam belt, mmmmmmmmm not such a good idea. i saw on here these engines are ok on a cam belt snap . personally i'd pay the 90 quid for new belt then go for the tune up .

hi,

I had the same problem with my gti. I changed the spark plugs and all is fine again.

My missus also has the same car and hers did the same thing for a while until i changed the plugs.

Ta, HTH.

Cam belts should be replaced every 60,000 miles so you have plenty of time to get it booked in for your next replacement. As Ant says try replacing the ignition components first (plugs, rotor arm, dist cap, and leads) My MR2 started to run a little like you describe a couple of months ago, I eventually tracked it down to being a faulty lambda sensor. Apparently they should be replaced every 60,000 miles too but seldom are( if it aint broke dont fix it). If it turns out to be that at least you can get to it on the Celica. You can get them cheap here http://www.justlambda.co.uk
