2010 Avensis "faulty Edu Drive"

Hi guys.

Any info/advice would be appreciated.

My avensis had the engine warning light come on three days ago as well as the parking brake fault. Noticed straight away that I had lost a lot of power when accelerating. Now feels like I'm driving a 1l corsa or something similar.

Brought it to the local Toyota garage and they have diagnosed a "faulty EDU drive" and said it will be upwards of a thousand euro for the part and labour.

Basically I'd love to know if anyone has any experience or info on this. Does it sound legitimate? Should I get another opinion before I go ahead with it?

I have been tinkering with cars for nigh on 20 years now and I have never come across an "EDU Drive" Google doesn't throw anything up either. Did they give you a diagnostic report?

Yea Google didn't throw up anything for me. Just one or two pages on an EDU circuit. I didn't get into the dealer just spoke on the phone. I'm picking the car up in the morning so I'll ask for a full diagnostic report with more info.

EDU Is Toyota speak for an Injector driver unit. On your car the complex task of controlling the injectors is handled by the injector driver unit which in turn communicates with the engine control unit ( ECU )

Called into the garage this morning. The senior mechanic said he'd only seen this go once before and that was in a taxi that had been in a crash.

The faults that came up on the diagnostic were.

P1271, p1604 and c1201.

It says the p1271 is the main fault and needs edu drive replaced at 1,032!

Haven't agreed to anything yet. Mech says there is a very slim chance of getting something second hand. Asked him is it a definite fix and he didn't give me a definite answer. Looks like I'll have to go ahead and get it done next week

in the plant game im in, on the more modern diesel engines, there are a few fuc4wits out there who disconnect injector wiring plug while engine is running to try and diagnose an engine running fault.

this was ok on the older stuff cracking off an injector fuel supply to listen for changes in engine note.

but the driver unit for the piezo injectors cant handle this disconnection whilst in pwm and blow the transistors for that channel

ive seen it on Cummings , Volvo . vag ,Mitsubishi fuso, perkins etc

always caused by a have a go mechanic trying to save money and diagnose a bad injector lol

when there is a function for cylinder disabling in the diagnostics menu for a reason
