Advice Please Re Problems After Dmf And Clutch Fitted

I have a 2005 Rav4 deisel and it recently had a new DMF and clutch fitted about 4 weeks ago.About 3 weeks later while waiting at a junction the gears would not work. The clutch appeared to be depressed OK and the gears appeared to be going into gear but the car would not move. The gears also appeared be going in without depressing the clutch ie there was no crunching sound. The garage who have yet to start work on the car doubt whether it is connected with the recent repair[which they did] and suggest something has gone wrong in the gearbox.Could it be connected with the DMF repair or is it likely to be something totally different.Any advice will be gratefully received

hi.First time poster.Sorry to here about your problem.I,m sure you'll find the right answer here from someone as i always have.I also have just had the dreaded dmf & clutch failure. Not only that but my gearbox was also damaged beyond repair & have had to replace it.My mechanic advised me that at some stage in the past, before i acquired the vehicle the dmf & clutch had been replaced, but whoever done the work put the clutch plate in the wrong way round. This in turn caused excess wear & pressure to the clutch and possibly damaged the gearbox.I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will say if this was really possible. After all the problems i have heard about the un-serviceable dmf & the failure rate, and advice from my mechanic,i opted not to fit a dmf and instead opted for the valeo smf conversion kit.Having the car now for a week or so all i can say is the difference is like night & day compared to how it drove before. The clutch is now really light & feels car like & the replacement gearbox i managed to source is super smooth.Even my mechanic was really impressed at the performance.I was really thinking of getting rid of it but as it now drives like new, i'll wait and see how it go's for a while before i decide for sure.Good luck.

It turns out that there was a fault with the clutch. In laymans terms, a nut somewhere in the clutch mechanism had come out, something which the garage had never seen before.New clutch installed, at no cost to myself, thankfully.

Hi david,

Glad you have got that sorted, and thanks for coming back and letting us know what the cause was.
