Hi Folks,

New to the forum.

Hoping someone can help.

I bought a Toyota Corolla 2001 Vvti Gs 1.4 last Saturday.

All was fine but the warning light came on this Monday, I was planning on taking it in to the garage asap but was very busy at work, then on Wednesday night the engine light started flashing and the car didn't have much power.

I took it into the garage the following morning, where it was diagnosed as the 3rd ignition coil. That was fixed (100 pounds) and the car was driving well again.

Then this morning drove it to work when the engine warning light has come on again.

Any ideas on what the issue might be?

Going up hills it has a very low tapping noise at times from the engine.

Hoping for it to be something minor, though it has around 144000 miles.

Many thanks,

Orson

Just to add as well as its Easter weekend the garage isn't open again until Tuesday morning as I tried to book it in today.

Thanks

I would advise you to get an OBD code scanner for the car. That way you can see what the issues are and any faults being stored in the ECU.

A guess could be another coil could be failing, an O2 sensor or worse the catalytic converter. It could be anything but a code reader will help find the cause.

When I am due to buy a car, I will be buying a code reader to check on any car I am about to buy.

Thanks for your quick response.

If it was another coil, how many coils does the corolla have?

In terms of it being a catalytic converter, theres a sort of blowing noise from the exhaust which was there before the coil was replaced.

How much would that roughly be to replace?

Thanks

There will be four coils in total, one for each cylinder.
