2005 Rav4 Diesel Heavy Vibration On Idle - Centre Bearing Failure Says

Hi All.

I’ve just joined the forum so hi to all.

Reason for post is I’m in the process of buying a 2005 (55)
Rav 4 diesel XTR, with 102k on the clock.

When I test drove it is has a really noticeable vibration on
idle (DMF shout!) but I’ve just had the AA inspect the car and say its most likely
a centre bearing worn, but said there’s a relative cheap fix (not Toyota £1,500).

Does this sound OK? As I’ve searched the issue and can only
find the DMF issue not the centre bearing / prop shaft worn.

There’s no reduction in vibration when the clutch is depressed,
again a sign that it’s not the DMF.

And lastly if it is the bearing failing, what is the cost –
anyone had to do this out there.

Cheers for now.

Will

I'm not the most mechanical of people but what is a centre bearing? If it doesn't feel right, don't buy it. The world is awash with used cars..

Not always vibration with a dmf failure, sure way is take it out again and accelerate in top gear from around 40 up , and watch therev counter, if it shhots up and then settles back , you've got a dmf problem. Also run uphill at around 2500 rpm and hear if you get a rattle in the gearstick in 5th. I've had a dmf done and I have the rattle, and I'm only on 42k miles.

sounds like money in this problem

We're on our 4th 4.2 and have been on this and other RAV forums for quite a few years. I have to say that the drivetrain is usually bomb-proof (apart from usual DMF issues) and I don't recall anyone raising a driveline problem before. If you're buying from a dealer then simply have him put it all right before you close the deal.

Otherwise, I'd vote with Redlew - find another car without issues. There's plenty around.

Well Thanks guys, I picked the car up yesterday, after the
garage fitting a new dual mass and clutch and surprise surprise the vibration
has completely gone!

However on driving home some 10 miles latter the engine management
light came on and the VSc lights lite up and the car went into limp mode!!!!! Pulled
over turned off the ignition a couple of times, and cleared the VSC but engine
man’ light stays on. Car now drives OK,
but any ideas?

Loose air pipe somewhere,

Fuel Cap

EGR

Cat

Any help would be great, but going back to garage today.
