Hi, new to your forum- and new to owning a Toyota.

Recently bought this 52 plate Corolla. High miles but really nice condition.

But within 3 months the gearbox has become noisy. The whine is directly related to road speed- it is no better/worse in any particular gear.

Any pointers please, and is this a common failing?

Topped up or changed the gearbox oil ?

Sure its the gearbox ? still there if you in freewheel in neutral at speed ?

Not a wheel bearing ?

I need to check the oil- but if it is low it's too late!

Yes, sure it's gear box.

No sound when stationary, engine running, clutch engaged. That discounts input, lay gear etc.

Low level sound on free wheel.

I think it is either a bearing/bearings on the output side of things or diff. area.

Your help is appreciated.

Not had anything to do with gearboxes though from what I read in the forum its typically a recon box job.

Plus if you have the gearbox out then a new clutch is sensible, but that is going to add to an already big bill.

I recently found local small company doing clutch and gearboxes only, ( I needed a new clutch) and seems they component repaired gearboxes, several shafts ,selectors and bearings on the office desk for customers to see what had been replaced.

Expect if you search you will find a similar place near you, though going on the price of a new clutch alone bet you will be looking at a £400 + job, probably a lot cheaper than an exchange box though..

Thanks. It's a bit of a dilemma all round. Considering the value of the car, the numbers just do not add up.

I can get a used box for around 200, with a 3 month warranty. Problem with that is the carriage costs are 50 each way. So I would have to try and source locally.

A 'recon' box will come out at more than 500. And I suspect 'recon' often means steam cleaned!

The parts to repair the existing box will likely be around 300-

Seems its a regular dilemma on older cars, of course you have not included around £100 for the clutch parts as it would be unwise not to replace if its a high miler.

Expect at the prices you mention it almost what ypou paid for the whole car, so its really down to how the \rest of the car is as to if its worth spending that amount on it ?

Have you tried to find anyone local who can repair yopu box like the place I found ?

Bit of a long story but might have to have a new, new clutch fitted, but considering doing it myself.

Short of an engine crane/hoist , seems a support bar is a better way to hold the engine up rather than a jack /wood block on the sump

We paid 1200 for the car end of last year. Although it had done 150k- it is unmarked inside and out.

It also drove like a 20k car.

The thinking was that if any thing was iffy it would have failed ages ago.

And then the gearbox fell over------

But that's the old motor bike syndrome- ran better than ever before------------ just prior to seizing up!

Re the support bar- I used a 3x3 lump of timber across the wing ridges, and rope, on a Mazda 323 a while back.

It worked well and the body showed no signs of stress.

What you have come up with would have saved the hassle of struggling with the rope.
