07 Yaris Keyless Ignition Problem

Hello

We have a 57 Yaris SR and occasionally had an issue getting it to either unlock or lock using either of the remote fobs but today after getting into the car it would not start.

The fob was on the passenger seat  but no response from the ignition. There was a yellow key light lit up on the dash and this happened with both fobs. The light is the smart entry and alarm warning light.

This must be related to the unwillingness to either open or lock on occasion.

Today the red light on the fob was flashing after trying  to start the car but this also happens when it refuses to unlock or lock.

Any thoughts anyone and does anyone know a Toyota specialist in the Bury/ Bolton area as RRG want £105 to run a diagnostic and then any costs to fix it on top of that

Sounds like you need to change the batteries on both key fobs...

Thank you for your reply, we've done that to try to sort out why the damn thing wouldn't lock or unlock and I guess that both batteries are no more than 6 months old maximum

Ah ok. Well from the indications you are getting, it sounds as if both fobs have somehow become unpaired with the car. You only get a limited amount of time to change the batteries before they lose their pairing if I remember correctly...

that may well have happened so it possible to re-pair them at home or does the dealer have to sort it out

I have also just found this which will/may probably apply to your car...

FOR 2002+
Procedure
1. Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2. Insert master key into the ignition cylinder.
3. Cycle the ignition cylinder from ON to OFF 5 times.
4. Open and close the driver side door 6 times.
5. Remove the master key and insert the new duplicate key.
6. DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON
7. The new key will be registered after 60 seconds.

thank you for your help, it looks as though an expensive trip to the dealer is now called for unless there is a way of pairing the fobs and the brain of the car

Just an idea, the keys haven't got anything on the keyrings with them have they?

I know when I first bought my Prius a few times the car wouldn't recognise the fobs, and this was always when they were in the same pocket as my iPhone. Perhaps there is something in / near the car interfering with them? Have you put anything new in the car since this has started happening?

Hi. Nothing at all. phone  thats about it. Both fobs are the same and only one of them has anything else on it and thats a couple of house keys but this problem is intermittent but this week has got worse.

What age is the car and how old is the cars 12v Battery?

I'm wondering if its starting to fail which could be a cause of this. Does it have issues locking once the car has been on a journey or only unlocking and starting?

the car is a 2007 model and starts first time and so I have no reason to believe the Battery is knackered. The problem happens randomly and its only the unlocking and now the starting issue

The starting ability of a Battery will not be good enough to advise of the Battery health. Starting required lots of juice / amps, where as sensitive electrical systems such as SRS monitors, and that of the keyless entry system are very much voltage dependant. A reduction of only .5v won't stop the car starting, but can cause other phantom problems.

I'd get the Battery properly drop tested myself. An ageing and slowly failing battery will probably be cheaper to replace than an hours diagnostics time from a main dealer.

Hi.

I am not sure if i have understood al the comments of this thread but are you able to enter the car and if so can you try just disconnecting the black/negative terminal for a while to reset the whole system and also even put some charge in the car Battery for a while, a few hours, then reconnect and see if it cures the problem................................secondly just fit a new car Battery before a possible expensive trip to the dealers and if you are feeling really keen buy a Battery from the dealers, i find their prices are very reasonable on certain consumable items.

well folks it went into RRG in Bury and the Battery is 100% or pretty close. They found an issue with something called an air flow meter and that has been replaced but it went through a full diagnostic at a cost of over £100.

They could find nothing wrong with the opening and closing but by coincidence my neighbour also has a key less entry Yaris of the same year and sometimes they have problems opening it with the remote, no issues with starting but certainly with the remote entry and so we along with Toyota reckon that its something in the air between the two houses

It isn't unheard of for an external source to affect the radio signal between the remote and the car - see:

Causes can vary but it could be something nearby operating on the same signal which is affecting your remotes - eg. wifi signals, wireless broadband, video sender linked to TV set top box, National Grid transmissions, wireless door bells, SMART meter signals, military or emergency services radio, etc ........
