This has probably been answered before but can anyone tell me why you can't replace the head gasket on a rav 4 t180

You can but only if the cylinder head & block faces are ok, if they need skimming then they are scrap as they cannot be skimmed and the cause of head gasket failure is most likely to be gasket shuffle caused by carbon stamping which will have damaged the block/head long before the gasket gave up. The cost of new block and head are substantial in both parts cost and labour involved hence Toyota introduced reconditioned engines assembled and ready to go ensuring there was no grey area over whether or not to replace block or head, ensuring all the required engine modifications where installed and cutting the labour involved to half that of a rebuild.
