Iq: Heavy Resonance Under Load At Low Rpm

Hey all - I captured a little video. Not too good, also because my phone camera doesn't know how to focus. But you can hear it around 4 and 9 seconds into the video. When coasting/slowing down (end of video), there is no resonance at all, hence only under load.

If it's a clutch thing I'm not going to even ask my garage, I'm not going to spend that kind of money :)

Thanks Maarten. Is your phone also vibrating on the dashboard, or is that noise just as you would hear it when driving?

Well I collected my car this morning, they say it is fixed although when I drive it there is still a vibration, not quite as bad as before, but noticeable to me. Apparently a Toyota rep has test driven it and pronounced that it was the normal IQ sound...

They could only give me a copy of the invoice sent to Toyota as it was done under warranty, apparently they replaced the gearbox bearings, gasket kit, seal packaging, seal type T OI, bearing radial and bearing tapere. If that makes sense to anyone?

All I can say is that after 3 weeks I am glad to be back in the IQ!!!!

Just had a clutch fitted to mine 5 hours later and the majority of the vibrations have gone

What people need to remember is this is an unbalanced 3cyl hairdryer !!!

A couple of years ago when i went to My Toyota Dealer,which st that time i did often, the service manager spotted me and said on the quiet that there had been a notice round to all the dealerships that there was a clutch issue with the iQ and if i wanted he would take mine in and change it for free. I pointed out mine is multi drive. He said the synptoms are juddering and resonating. He said there wasn't a recall but were sympathetic to it. Before you ask i don't know if that was 3 or 4 cylinders that are effected.

Hi everyone we finally took our little 2009 Iq2 to SLM Toyota Uckfield yesterday, the technician came out with me, then checked the car in the workshop and then checked for bulletins and for submitted product reports, three of which seemed to describe faults very similar to ours, in one of the reports the main engine mount was replaced (no comments where left about how much this helped), in the other two the clutch was replaced, in one of the reports it says that there was excessive play in the clutch centre plate where the splines connect to the clutch plate, this could well explain the noise we get with the resonance and vibration, on one report it quotes "we replaced the clutch plate, cover and bearing and road tested the car. What a difference it's perfect now :-)" the technician was really good, was thorough and really wanted to get to the bottom of the problem (he likes the iq very much, his Mum has even just bought one!), he said if the car had been under warranty he would be replacing the clutch, being almost sure it would fix the fault.

So with that in mind and with the success other forum members have had once the clutch has been replaced I think we need to go ahead and replace the it, as a trained technician myself I feel we will end up doing the job ourselves, I'm trying to decide whether to fit a genuine Toyota clutch or would we actually be better fitting an luk or blueprint kit to reduce the chance of the fault coming back???? I'm going to ring around for prices on Monday and to see if the original clutch kit has been superseded by Toyota maybe pointing to a different centre plate.

The technican told me he thought they quote 7 hours to replace the clutch but that he can do it much quicker, this time is to remove the engine and gearbox, he said he believed you can get the gearbox out on it's own but he hasn't tried this way (he's only had to replace two iq clutches before due to normal wear and tear). Has anyone had their gearbox out themselves, a few pointers would be great, ie yes you can get the gearbox out on it's own ok, or if the engine has to come out too do you have to evacuate/regas the ac or can you unbolt and move the pump away?

Long time no see. The resonance is still there. Still suspect the clutch, but as we're thinking to buy a bigger car (I love this baby :'( ), we won't replace it.

However, I found out that there now is an official recall for the exhaust manifold/egr issue. Let's see what that brings.

My 2013 IQ has started making this resonance when the engine is under load at 2000 rpm. The car is approaching 40000 miles. My previous IQ didn't do it, and my friend's one which has similar mileage doesn't do it. I am a careful driver and don't thrash or labour the engine. When the problem started several months ago, it was quite mild but has suddenly got much worse and now the rear view mirror shakes so much that I can't see out of it. 2 passengers have commented on it, and It makes the car awkward to drive economically, one of the reasons I got the car.

When the problem was mild, I mentioned it to Letchworth Toyota, where a technician and manager took it for a test drive and agreed that there was a problem. They suspected it was something to do with the clutch bearing but said I would have to leave it with them for a few days to investigate. Last week, I left the car with Letchworth Toyota where the mechanic took it on a 15 mile drive (somewhat excessive I think!), and said it was faultless.  100 metre drive up the road is enough to show the problem, but maybe he needed to drop someone off at the airport. I only have a few weeks left on the warranty, so maybe they are hoping to put things off until it has expired.

 

This is an informative thread, and I will update with new info if I get any.

Hi, don't let it rest, get onto Toyota UK and make sure that they know you have registered an issue with the car as it will soon run out of warranty.

From your profile, your IQ is a 2013 model and you live in Hertfordshire, so unless the car was bought new in another country, your Toyota GB new car warranty will be for 5 years/100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

So, assuming you don't reach 100,000 miles before you reach the five years, your new car warranty should expire sometime in 2018 - not in a few weeks.

Thanks FROSTYBALLS, the car is still with them and I will keep on them. I'll have to check, but I thought the warranty was 60 000 miles / 3 years.  If not, then all is good. Either way, I will get in touch with Toyota UK as have had trouble with the service at this particular garage before.

The Toyota GB new car warranty has been 5 years/100,000 miles since 1st July 2010..

the basic Toyota Europe warranty is 3 years/60,000 miles but Toyota UK decided to increase it to 5 years/100,000 from 1st of June 2010. I don't think that any other country's Toyota marketing company has followed suit?

I have just got back from Toyota. I wasn't in the best of moods, having spent most of the weekend bedridden with the lurgy and was ready to do battle but they couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. I went for a drive with the workshop foreman but couldn't get the car to do the 2000 rpm vibration. He said he would look into it and see if he could find any workshop bulletins om the problem, and if it returned to drop in and they would investigate.

Driving home on urban roads and a bit of motorway, I could still feel and hear a bit of resonance at 2000 rpm but it is much less than before. This is after a full service - new air filter, oil and oil filter, but spark plugs not changed. So there seems to be an underlying resonance that get exacerbated by some other factor. I did find a forum comment elsewhere that the vibration was reduced by changing the air filter.  Maybe changing the filter alters the engine characteristics enough to reduce the resonance?

This vibe is caused by 'clutch buzz' which is where the friction damping of the clutch outer decreases with increased mileage due to wear. This leads to the clutch outer (the big friction plate) which is excited by the 120° crank firing interval of the triple, oscillating at a resonance coincidental to the frequency of the firing pulses where, as it's lost its damping the combustion vibration is transmitted into the drive train and ultimately into the engine/gearbox mounts and through drive shafts/suspension and into the vehicle Shell and cabin.

The only solution unfortunately is a replacement clutch assy, the vibe shall still be present but at a much lesser intensity than before. Until Toyota understand how to damp the combustion resonances of their triple over increased mileages through the clutch, the issue shall re-appear after a similar mileage has been covered after the clutch change.

You can drive around it by using more rpm or just easing off the throttle a touch as the revs pass through the resonance band but it kind of spoils the drive and may increase your mpg slightly.

EDIT: I just start looking up a bit of the reported EGR problems, but (at work) don't have enough time to figure out if this is related. I noticed the car is sometimes hesitant to pick up. When I floor the pedal in 2nd or 3rd gear, it accelerates for a bit, then hesitates, then goes again, hesitates again, and continues to go. In 4/5 acceleration is so slow that you couldn't notice it. I'm not sure, but I believe it doesn't always do it - some days more severe than others. Any thoughts about a relation between the two?

I had the same problem with my 2013 Toyota I.Q Manual. During revs from 1000 to 2000 and between 1st and second gear it would vibrate. Slowly slowly it got worse over the months. Finally i had it checked out by my local mechanic, who found out that the front brake caliper was ceasing intermittently on the front drivers side. When it would cease, it would vibrate the car. Anyway, he sorted out the problem and now the car drives perfectly. No more vibration. Also, there is a little more power as well as its not restricted. 

Before you go and spend loads of money on the EGR, get the calipers checked out.

Mine has done 4000 miles (2010 1.0 litre) and is making the same resonance noise.  If it is the clutch as everyone seems, what are the likely costs of replacement - anyone know of an independent specialist in the East Midlands?

Had a similar problem with a heavy resonation. Purchased my iq approx 2 1/2 years ago as an approved Toyota. Mileage was around 35000, one owner full service history. Immediately noticed a heavy resonation, returned to the dealer Newport Toyota who arranged for an engineer to accompany me on a test drive. He claimmed that the resonation was perfectly normal and that I was in the wrong gear. When I pointed out the eco light was telling me to change down, he told me to ignore it. I found it a bit far fetched, I've been driving for close to 30 years and never had any similar problems. Other with this problem I was more than happy with the car, as a result i tended to drive it, keeping the revs high and staying in a low gear. This would regularly result in me staying in second gear around town, up to 30mph. This week the car came to a halt, no clutch, just a grinding noise if i tried pulling away in gear. The car has just come back from the garage with a £700 repair bill. The mechanic told me that although the clutch had plenty of meat left on it, it had exploded, damaging the slave cylinder shaft, which also had to be replaced. So £300 pounds of parts, new clutch, bearing,shaft and 7 hours labour later, i have my iq back. And guess what, no resonation, vibration. 10mph in 4th gear, smooth as anything. Quite clearly not my driving and not something they all do Mr Toyota. Would be interested to know if this is a manufacturing fault, quite possibly the resonation could have been something out of balance which caused the clutch to explode. Unfortunately my iq is 6 years old now and out of warranty.

Do you know which brand of replacement clutch was used? Having similar issues with my car which is approaching 70,000 miles so perhaps a new clutch is due.

I was told back in 2013 that there was a problem with the manual gearbox/clutch by the service manager of my local dealership who knew me due to various mods i had done to my iQ. He said that a number of dealerships has reports of Juddering and vibration in 2nd gear and that there may be a Bulletin released about it. He told me as he had forgotten mine is a Auto and was just trying to give me the heads up on it. So it may be that you can approach them and make them aware there is a known issue.
