I have a 2002 Corolla. The driver's seat is inclined as far forward as driveability will allow, but for some reason it will not tilt backwards to a more relaxed, reclined position. The mechansim simply refuses to work in this direction. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with the seat adjustment? What are my options? I am concerned that any inadvertent movement forward, while trying to fix the recline problem, will render the car undriveable. Can anyone suggest anything - aside from taking it into a Toyota garage?

Would bet a Toyota delaer would just want to fit a complete new seat at mega bucks !

Have not heard about it being a common problem and no idea what that mechanism is like to work on / repair.

If you are able to look into it yourself it might be something as simple as debris blocking the mechanism or if parts needed , you might be able to get them from Toyota or more likely a scrap yard, possibly a complete scrapyard seat might be simpler. ( thats what they usually do on the Wheeler Dealer tv program if you get it down there)

However don't just unbolt and remove the seat as you have to follow a correct power off sequence and disconnect the sensors / airbags if fitted.

This section from a 2004 model might help
