When you were told by the dealer 'that it was the throttle position sensor and you will be okay', what did they do about the sensor?

By saying the sensor is the cause, is telling me it may be faulty and that fault is intermittent and getting worse (plus dangerous).

Is your car manual or auto (CVT). If the car is manual, at least you can dip the clutch to stop the acceleration.

I would lower the cruise control speed as low as possible, in case the fault is linked to the cruise control somehow.

Get it back to the dealer and if the fault is happening more often, get a mechanic to go with you and replicate the condition to trigger the fault.

What about a OBD data logging, capturing what the car is doing whilst driving?

I don't know if the Avensis was subject to the accelerator pedal recall programme same as the Auris was.

If you have the CTS pedal fitted to yours get them to change it to the Denso pedal.. I did with my Auris.
