Took my baby to have new plugs fitter by friend at Hiq (got plugs from eurocarparts for £7.20 ea) apparently absolute bargin. Arn't they cute, like little jewels. Decided Rik could fit them as its looks a faf. First thing he asked was have you got a manifold gasket. No. He scanned it and it was saying lambda probe fault, which he cleared. Went to Mr T and ordered a gasket. (Nothing is ever in stock) and car ran really well, the slight jerkyness which it has always had was gone. Until it stalled and almost refused to start at traffic lights. Jerkyness is back. Went back to Mr T to order lambda sensors £329.50 ouch. Mr T advised to check which of the 2 is showing a fault as apparently it is usually only one gone wrong. Rik has advised to stick with o.e. probs as apparently aftermarket ones are false economy. Mmm. Any thoughts or advice anybody. Now awaiting gasket. Cheers Colin

Yeah;

1, Why didn't you get the car serviced at Toyota. I know it's immediately said they're more expensive but many will price match or at least it's worth asking if they would.

2, When was your IQ registered as it might be a car with the 5 year/100k mile warranty and the oxygen sensor might have been covered.

3, What is your mileage? Are you just out of warranty (assuming you have the 5 year warranty).

Hi.

In heinsight it may of been a better option to of chatted to a dealer first but on many things in life heinsight is a wonderful thing if things don't go right. People think dealers are dearer to get cars repaired but this is not always true and if only a dealer has worked on the car if something else should go wrong they are more likely to give a goodwill gesture, ie.e a cheaper or free job.

I have an iQ3 and the manifold gasket isn't a gasket, it's a re-usable rubber seal. I replaced my plugs and just cleaned the mating faces of the manifold and refitted the original seal and it's all good. The seal still felt nice and soft and with no damage it was fine to use again.

I don't think the seal is part of the problem unless it was damaged when removed.

Might be worth looking at the "iq Breaking" ads on eBay and see if anyone is breaking an accident damaged iQ3. May be able to get both sensors for a lot less than the cost of one.

Thanks Guys. My car was registered june 2010 but the Toyota spares sheet shows build date July 2009. Unfortunately the warranty expired at 3yrs. When Rik started to remove the manifold the gasket started breaking up even when easing with a feeler gauge so he retightened it. I asked him about just replacing the faulty sensor but the code is showing sensors fault. Ive been trying to find a supplier of either Bosch or Denso which were both fitted by toyota on various models, but as yet can only find the dearer one of the two for £105 online instead of the £162.76+ vat that Mr T wants. Im yet to find someone with both in stock. The other is £110.68 from Toyota. They have quoted me £450 + vat to do the job. Ouch Cheers Colin

If the car was registered in June 2010 then it has a 5yr/100k warranty the build date is not relevant the registration date is.

Unless it's some strange import from Japan or Ireland? Is the June 2010 the date of FIRST registration in the UK? If so, then chances are it should have the 5 year warranty?

If it was registered in Eire in 2009 and then brought to the UK in 2010, then yes, you'll have the 3 year warranty.

Thanks but I have checked with yota and they say it was first registered on Ilse of Wight and was pre 5yr warranty. Its not a black import or anything strange, but it had been in the dealers showroom for 6months before it was sold and registered. I once had a Audi A2 that had spent 18months unsold in a showroom. Seems I am attracted to 'lame ducks' Cheers Colin

That doesn't sound right at all. The Isle of Wight would be the same as UK rules. The warranty applies from the date of first registration not the date of manufacture.

What are the first four charactors of the registration number?

HW10 but I have checked with Toyota who confirm that it was pre 5yr warranty. Shame, but thats prob why it wasnt another £2k when I bought it. You get what you pay for is I think what they say. Cheers Colin

Turns out mine was registered 30 april 2010, 5 yr warranty started 1st june. Mr T tells me that the Lambda sensors would probably not have been covered anyway as they are a 'service item'. Not sure that would have been right but its irrelevant anyway. Cheers Colin

Ongoing to previous. New plugs fitted, now has a missfire at 2500 revs in top when on light load. Grr. Been back to 'Rik' who has tested it and couldnt find any fault and machine not throwing up any codes inc no lambda code. (yippee) that saves £400. Suggests it might be a faulty denso plug, but ask that I run it for 500ml to see if it gets better or worsens. I wonder if they didnt seat the gasket properly when they replaced it as it looked a bit misshapen in its bag. or if a plug gap wasnt as it should be. Nitemare. Have added half a can of wynns injector/system cleaner (about 6 different choices in Halfords) (forgot to use my discount card grr). Difficult to tell if still playing up as bad (windy) weather has returned. Now had enough, was running fine before I decided it was time for a plug change. The good news is it was back up to 57.1 on last fill up. Cheers Colin

If it really is mis-firing it's not going to sort itself out after 500 miles.

You run the risk of causing more damage to the engine and catalytic converter running it like that. I would remove the manifold again and check the plugs are fitted correctly, make sure the ignition coils that sit on top of them are fitted correctly and plugged in firmly and then check the intake manifold seal again.

Also check that all the sensors that are unplugged during the job are re-fitted. There is one on the air filter box that can be easily missed.

If you can't do this yourself I'd be taking it somewhere else for a second opinion.

Thanks again Guys. Yes just got to wait for the rain to stop then have a go at dismantling it myself. I was hoping to avoid that which is why I took it to Hiq to start with. I suspect it is something like you say Craig. Its not actually missfiring, just feels like a strong headwind that suddenly gives way. Could be just that of course, but sure its the car. Its really annoying me now. Might have a go today if the rain holds off. Too dark to see properly in my garage even with a lamp.

What a faf. Dismantled everything from manifold only to find needed a universal joint from Halfords. put it all back together. Got it all apart only to find I dont have a plug spanner to fit. (How many sizes are there) Anyway cleaned it all up put it back together and fault still there. One question Craig, how does the blue electrical connector on the right of the manifold come off ?? Had to leave it in and pull the manifold to one side, not ideal. Next job buy another new set of plugs, get a spanner that fits and start all over. Grrr, Cheers Colin

The blue plug is bit of a fiddle.

If you look around the back of the plug where the cables enter the plug there is a small plastic rectangular tab visible. If you squeeze that tab towards the cables and wiggle the plug while you are doing that it will start to slide off.

Squeezing that tab causes the other end of the tab to move away from the connector body and unhook itself from the catches on the mating connector.

Thanks Craig. Weather perfect today. Will try eurocarparts for a 'spare' plug and spanner to fit and have another go. See if I can see a different colour or a wrong gap. Was thinking should replace the lot with a set of NGK's but another £50 is not an option at mo. Cheers Colin

Well got a spare plug, nightmare getting a plug spanner, Halfords said try 'Phoenix tools' who had a 14mm long reach spanner. Fortunately the rubber insert from a old plug spanner fitted, so whipped the plugs out (all looked ok) cleaned everything very carefully, put in new plug put it all back together (after having asked local garage if they could check the plugs) No not unless the car is running ?? All done in less than an hour (still couldnt get the blue connector off) Took it for a ride, better but still not as it was pre new plug fiasco. It will have to do, Ive had enough. Had to fill up whilst out, and YIPPEE fuelly sez 58.1. wow. average slowly creeping up. Cheeers Colin
