2000 Gls Remote Central Locking Problem. Tried Reprogramming But Unsuc

Just purchased another avensis, but the remote central locking doesn't work.

I replaced the batteries and checked online for details about reprogramming the key.

I found a few different approaches to the problem and appeared to be getting a result, until the final stage.

I followed a sequence where you open the drivers door, insert the key, remove. Open and close door a few times, then repeat the sequence. Then turned the key twice in succession, then removed the key. The locking system then ran through the expected routine

It was then I encountered problems. The advice given was to keep the lock button pressed while pressing the unlock button five times, then completing the process by pressing the lock button for a few seconds. I tried this several times and even tried to change the timings slightly, but it would not complete the results.

It is the key fob without the led and just the two buttons, for lock and unlock.

What I did notice is that there is a red flashing light, next to the switches for rear window demister and the hazard lights switch, which I though was for the alarm, or immobiliser. This is on constantly. Even whilst driving. I'm not in a position to pay an auto electrician, plus I like to do my own repairs. I was only given one key with the car and I thought it would be a simple case of replacing the batteries, but I tried for hours to get it working. I'm guessing it's something simple I'm overlooking, and would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks Tonos.

Have you got the owners hand book and have your tried resynchronising the key?

The instructions are from the following: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/91321-remote-central-locking-being-tempremental/

This is instruction is taken from the manual: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/166489-avensis-1998-unlock-remote-key-fix-taken-from-forum/?p=1377120

I changed the key batteries and one of the keys failed to unlock the door and disarm the alarm. The procedure fixed the problem and both my keys work fine now.

The other issue that happened to me is the 7.5A dome fuse located in the engine compartment, degraded without actually blowing. This causes the condition that the remote does not work, so you have to use the key in the lock, the alarm sounds. I replaced the fuse.

Two fixes that may restore your key and central locking.

I hope it is as simple as this.

Thanks Konrad!

The only thing I haven't checked is the dome fuse. I will do it tomorrow and let you know if I'm successful, or not.

Checked the dome fuse and still unsuccessful. I can get through the process until the end bit, where its suggested that you hold the lock button, then press the unlock button five times, followed by releasing lock button, then pressing either button for 1 second.

Second post regarding this matter.

Onto my third mk1 avensis, but this one has faulty remote c/l.

I have located several posts regarding this type of problem, but can't get over the final hurdle when reprogramming.

It came equipped with only one key, and I don't know if it's the original, or even if that would have any significance when reprogramming.

I've been doing this sequence:

In drivers seat

Doors unlocked

Open drivers door

Insert key without turning, remove

Doors close open close open

Insert key without turning, remove

Doors, close open close open close

Insert key and turn to on for a second, then remove key from ignition.

After this little display of car hokey-cokey, the c/l cycles through the locking, unlocking, as described in the guides.

I'm then (what I think) expected to keep the lock button pressed and quickly press the unlock button five times.

Release, then press the lock button for a second.

This final section of the reprogramming does nothing.

Am I missing something?

Internal light works, dome fuse been checked. New batteries installed. So what's wrong?

I have noticed that the red led - which I thought was something to do with the alarm/immobiliser- which is to the left of the rear window demist button stays in a continual flashing mode. Whether the car is locked, unlocked, running or whatever. Could this have something to do with it?

Anyone have any ideas? Apart from taking it to a auto-electrician!

Thanks Tonos.

I thought that if the key was not matched to the car it would not start the engine! Since the key starts the car, then it just needs the basic sync for the remote to unlock and disarm the alarm. The key is recognised by the e mobilise.

One of my keys would not unlock and disarm the arm so I did the simple resync, not the long process you are using.

You have not said that you tried the resync process, only the convoluted process.

For the sake of others, if your key stops working, try this before going to the full process:

1. Open the driver's door.

2. Insert into the ignition switch, and turn it to "ON" and wait for 10 seconds.

3. Push either the "LOCK" or "UNLOCK" buttons on the key twice. You will hear the door locks operate.

This was taken from the handbook with minor adjustments to the wording.

I always start on the simplest, cheapest fix and work from there.

Going back to the dome fuse. If your central locking works using the door locking button on the drivers arm rest, then the fuse is okay.

The key can unsync after being pressed too many times away from the car, or after changing the batteries.

The worst scenario would be knocking the key off the immobiliser? That's when you need to do the full key/door thing to add a key. This also can remove keys!

The other option is an auto locksmith who can programme your key and provide a spare cheaper than Toyota. They will block the missing/lost key.

Let's hope it is sorted.
