Acceleration Malfunction...

Really could do with your help on my small problem.

Please forgive me if this is a little bit long winded, however I want to get the facts across rightly.

I own a 2002 Toyota Celica with around 110,000 miles, when I bought the car I gave it a proper service oil plugs filters etc did not change the fuel filter, for I was under the impression it didn't need changing through reading many posts on here. The car is in immaculate condition however I think it's been used for pottering around town before I got my hands on it.

The problem is that when I get in it some days it's like greased lightning, other days it's just like a normal saloon. The characteristics are as follows.

Number one.

At the very beginning of the throttle when I pushed the accelerator down, there is a flat spot, and when I've noticed this flat spot it seems to be there all through the gears when I really concentrate on the feeling. When this happens the car doesn't seem to run as powerful as it should do. It takes a little bit of effort to get to the rev range where the VVT engages (a little bit sluggish) when I first got the car it wouldn't do over 90 mile an hour, however with me continue using it and given it some stick it is getting to weigh over the hundred mph now.

Number two.

On the other occasions when there is no hesitation at the bottom end of the throttle the car runs like greased lightning very smooth and very responsive quite powerful in fact. It gets into the VVT range quite satisfactory … You can definitely feel the power, and the VVT engaging. I have also noticed that when I start the car it seems that its holding the engine revs a lot higher (like it's on automatic choke, I can even feel when the choke comes off or it drops is revs) this also seems like a little bit of improvement to the number one problem.

Number three.

I really don't know what to do, I'm thinking is there any sensors throughout the engine and i have spoke to a few mechanics and they're not sure where and what they do, it's getting a little bit annoying now sometimes when I want to put my foot down going round a roundabout etc there's always a hesitation before it builds up, it seems to Rêv but go nowhere (compared to when its running really well). So there you have it my friends I'm wondering if you could be so helpful to your Toyota enthusiast living in the UK.

you asked the same questions on "another" Celica owner's site...I replied to you there...simples.!

There is a high degree of probability that it is your MAF sensor causing the issues.
