Yaris T-Sport 2001 Gearbox

I have brought a Yaris t-sport , when trying to select first , when positioning into first I have to pull it to the right slightly for it to go in , Its like changing gear on an old car and hitting the H-gate . can anyone advise what is wrong with , my initial thoughts are to replace the selector ..

Having owned a couple of the T sports, I know that the gear box is very precise and deliberate, and you do have to work the gear box quite hard, I used to find the 3rd gear quite difficult to get into, this is due to the sporty nature of the car.... that said it depends on the mileage of the car, as to whether the gear box has a problem... is it just 1st or all the gears?

It only happens on 1st gear , where first gear is in top left corner when you select you have to pull it towards third slightly (very slightly )
