Hello ,

For the past two weeks the Automatic Transmission does not work properly . There is a delay when moving gears after the vehicle started going ( about fifteen minutes ) and especially at the low gears : 1,2,3 . Sometimes there is also limestone raps low driving speeds of
20-40 mph mostly .

During this week the vehicle tested several times using a computer : automatic Transmission and engine and the results = found nothing (all right ),

also yeterday the Yestethe gear oil ( opening Carter ) and transmission filter replaced with new ones.

The problem still exists , what should I do ?

Thanking you in advance

Zak

This sounds like it could be the 4.2 autobox ECU problem for which there is a fix which involves re-flashing the software in the ECU. If so, the ECU can be sent off to either :

ECU Testing in UK (www.ecutesting.com/‎)

or Check Engine (in US) :

Address: 2731 Stillwell Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11224, United States
I don't have a web addy for them.

However I could be misunderstanding the poster's problem and specifically I'm afraid I do not understand what is meant by two comments:

"Sometimes there is also limestone raps low driving speeds of 20-40 mph mostly ." and

"opening Carter"

Hello

First of all , thank you for your prompt response , I appreciate it very much.

Secondly ,what i meant by two comments:

1/ When Speed drive 20-40 mph at times hear light beatings / raps from the automatic transmission box.

2/ 2 days ago at the Car repair garage , they opened the oil tank of the automatic transmission box and replace the old oil filter (whice was completely blocked) & the oil (which was with the smell of burnt) by new ones.

2 more things :

1/ The problem occurs especially when the vehicle accelerates and while switching gear 1-2-3 . What I do in the meantime , lowers my foot off the accelerator and then repeat gear transmission line.

2/ I am sorry for my English occasionally lacking ...

Thanks again and have a good day , zak

Don't apologise, Zak, it's OK.

It might not be the ECU problem but, if it is, it is very important that you don't drive the car because it will quite quickly destroy the box. If that were to happen the repairs would cost more than £2 - 3K GBP.

If you remove the ECU and send it off to one of the repairers mentioned above, they will test it and repair if necessary - about £300GBP, if I recall. If the ECU is OK they will only charge a nominal inspection fee (in ECUT's case, I think it is about £25GBP); this might be the best way forward at a reasonable cost.

I don't know where you are located but, if you use ECUT, they give a 10% discount to TOC members but you have to quote "Don" on their paperwork or simply ask them for it.

Good luck.

Zak, I don't mean to be pessimistic but if Israeli Toyota dealers are anything like the ones on UK, they will only recommend a new ECU (if the box isn't damaged) or a new box plus ECU (if the box is damaged). They do not recognise that the ECU can be re-flashed and they won't recommend it - they may even try to tell you that it isn't a good idea. But a number of members on this forum (including me a couple of years ago with our 2002 4.2) have used one or other of the repairers that I've mentioned with virtually 100% success.

I don't know if ECUT will do overseas work but Check Engine certainly do. Make sure that you send it by secure courier or insured mail.

Godd luck & keep us posted here.

Hello to you again (what is your name?)

Okay , I'm optimistic ...

This morning I started driving with the vehicle and the gearbox back to working almost smooth .

It communicates what my mechanic told me two days ago when he finished the treatment that I mentioned earlier

( replacement Gear Oil + Gear Oil filter by new ones) . He said it will take several days to the transmission will return to work properly because the filter was completely blocked , also should come to him again today to add gear oil additive then it should resolve this problem completely .

I will update in the coming days in the hope that it was the problem .

Sincerely , Zak
