Help Me Understand My 2003 Avensis, I Am New To Toyota

I recently bought a 2003 automatic toyota avensis with 140k on the clock. My problem is everything is in Japanesse. I am not sure about the service history. it is the second week since I received this car from japan.

1. I need to know after how many kilometers should I change the timing belt?

2. Is it normal for the car to brake and release when i am braking and about to stop?I noticed when I am braking and about to come to a stop the car will be braking and slitly releasing the brake until it comes to a stop.

3. Can anyone PLEASE help me with an owner's manual which explains what is used for what in this car.

4. My back left tyre was damaged and I am using a small space wheel. I ahve noticed when I am doing about 80km/hr there is a sound coming from that sound like i have a faulty bearing. Is it normal to get that sound from using such a wheel or the bearing is worn-out. I am using 17inch rims with 215/45 R17 tyres.

I can not take the car to toyota at the moment because they charge an arm and a leg for simple things.

Hello Tawanda - welcome to Toyota Owners Club

As regards the compact or temporary spare wheel, these usually have a speed limit of 50mph/80kph.

Im guessing its petrol with being a automatic- if its a vvti its chain driven no need for changing the belt, keep oil services regular to aid chain life

Timing belt should be changed every 50,000 miles I think.

ABS brakes do that to stop the car without locking the wheels. Thats pretty normal.

Cant help with a manual. Sorry.

Sound could be the space saver tyre but I doubt it. I think you should go to your local mot garage and get them to check out all your links and bearing

As regards the space saver,I was thinking more along the lines that it is probably the original spare, the rubber will have deteriorated since 2003 and be showing a degree of perishing, and now probably may not be safe to be driving on it at its maximum design speed - 80kph.

I think your space saving tyre is the cause of the sound you are hearing/ Also remember that it may have a distance restriction as well as the 80kph speed limit. Get the proper tyre repaired as soon as possible. Then you will know if the bearing is faulty, which I doubt.

For your information, the rear bearing is a hub unit that is very expensive. This hub cannot be split to access the bearing, but is easy to change as a whole unit.

This is why I would rather the space saver be the source of the noise. I had a tyre that sounded like a noisy wheel bearing.

As already answered by 'I', your car is petrol so the engine is chain cam. If it was diesel then it would have a cam belt that would need to be changed at regular intervals.

You need to edit your profile to add more details about your car. Engine size, fuel type, year. This will help.

'IF' it had a timing belt it would be 60,000, mind you I think the genuine belts can last a bit longer, its the water pumps you got to watch out for. diesels were belt driven until 2006. I don't think they did a diesel automatic in the t22 or t25.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you so.much for the responses. My Avensis is a 2003 model, T250, 2 litre D-4 vvt-i engine with automatic transmission. I bought a new tyre and repalced the spare one and the noise is gone now.

I noticed something that is of concern to me. I put 16lts petrol last week and I only did 100km. I was using it to go to work with aircon off. Is this normal on city driving where I am doing about 80 km/hr max. A friend told me to reset the ecu and clean the mass airflow sensor using acetone. Is this advisable
