Hi peeps,I own a Yaris hybrid with cvt transmission.i have often wondered can these engines be over revved like other cars past the red line or are the hybrids Prius s etc revs controlled by the ecu to prevent engine damage.has anyone any feedback much appreciated thx

The engine can be very revvy if at full throttle and accelerating hard, or on over run downhill, but the engine is very well controlled by the engine ECU's. i have never seen one damaged by over revving

As above, not possible without serious modifications to the standard car. Feel free to Rev away :)

Of the top of my head, and allowing for my wild imagination and inaccuracy of my memory, some ways to wreck your hybrid transmission.

1) Rapidly demand full power by pressing hard on the accelerate and then hitting a man-hole cover, this will cause the wheels to slip and then the traction control will take over. Do that often enough and maybe the momentary high torque wheel slip could damage the transmission or the permanently engaged clutch between the petrol engine and the transmission.

2) Put the car into neutral at high speed, if the petrol engine is stopped, if I recall the smaller motor generator has to spin beyond its designed rpm.

3) A bit of a cheat, put the car into the maintenance mode and disable the permanent traction control, then drive the car around.

WHAT, you can disable the traction control?

Also on the Prius Gen3?

That could be useful when stuck in the winter months.

I can not see how damaging your Hybrid transmission would be useful in winter (or any other season).

Disabling the traction control is a diagnostic maintenance procedure. The car has permanent traction control to protect the Hybrid transmission it is there for a very good reason.

If you get stuck in mud you turn off traction control so the wheels spin constantly instead of juddering, also if you keep the button held for 3 seconds it turns off the vehicle stability control, don't know why you would do that must Google it to see .....

What button is that then?

The button between the front seats just in front of the handbrake with the VSC symbol on it. (1 of a group of 4 on the Yaris - one being a dummy)

He never said there were four, he did mention blank(s) being there also.

I'm not sure in which revision the Yaris Hybrid acquired the VSC off button, but the original Yaris Hybrid I test drove when they first came out only had ECO & EV.

I don't recall seeing a VSC off button in the Auris Hybrids I've driven either, but my 2012 Prius certainly doesn't have one.
