Does the {Prius use glycol or silicone based brake fluid, dear P-K

Why is it an optional procedure rather than a service essential?

Toyota do not include things like brake fluid, AC service etc, they class them as recommended at certain intervals. This is pretty much standard in the industry for most manufacturers

That'll be Western then? I don't know why they do that but they do themselves a disservice as it makes them look dearer than Toyota's Fixed Price Servicing when they are not.

I know that when I took out my latest service contract (Arnold Clark, Bishopbriggs) it was a bit of a no-brainer as it included an Intermediate, a Full & 2 MOTs for iirc ~ 15% less than the fixed price Intermediate & Full would have cost separately.

@Heidfirst, you're right. It does not make it attractive to go to a Toyota dealer for services. They did confirm that as long as the work is done by a VAT registered garage and according to Toyota's specification, it would not void any warranty. This is also for repairs...... So.... would the same apply to post fitting a cruise control?

PS in the Netherlands the cruise control comes as an accessory on the Auris hybrid, but at 360 Euro's it's not cheap but at least it has been confirmed it would not void the warranty.

Brake fluid is due every 2 years regardless of mileage, if it was included with every full service high mileage drivers would be changing the fluid more often then needed and paying too much. Some of our high mileage users do in excess of 80,000 a year if the brake fluid was done every full service they could end up having/paying for 7-8 brake fluid changes before just one was due. Hence Toyota separate it from a service the same applies to Pollen filters only being replaced when needed rather than at a fixed interval.

Dear Lee....if the brake fluid is recommended to be changed every 2 years, it should be included on that particular reg car at that time, regardless of mileage of level of service

I can't see how some drivers would have it done more often than the 2 year recommendation

personally, I have a feeling thhat these 'recommendations' are to keep the service price lowish, but possibly if the recommendation is not taken up, the warranty for that item would be affected......a/c not serviced last time, and now a not working, mmmmmm

I can see Lee's point - for drivers who do 30,000 miles a year or more and who require their vehicle to be serviced on the mileage basis rather than time, having the brake fluid change included within the 'Full' service schedule (ie every 20,000 miles) would mean they are having the brake fluid change done too often and unnecessarily.

As with any manufacturer, it is the owner/driver's responsibility to ensure that the car is serviced according to the manufacturer's service schedule, and if the manufacturer specifies additional service inspections or replacements over and above the intermediate and full services or equivalents, the onus remains with the vehicle owner/driver to ensure these additional service requirements are done.

We've had air conditioning in each of our cars since February 1998 (totalling eleven cars with air con), and probably due to using the air con throughout the year and keeping the systems lubricated through use, have, to date, not had to have any of their air conditioning systems re-gassed or serviced during our period of ownership. None of the manufacturers we've bought air conditioned cars from (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai) have specified when air conditioning should be serviced. It certainly isn't included as a service requirement in the service & warranty booklets of our current cars.

As frosty says I've always tried to use my air con at least weekly even in the winter as it just keeps the system lubricated. Re servicing I've just got a 63 plate with 5k on it and it has been serviced at 3800 miles and again at 5000 miles so I'm at a quandary as to when I get it serviced again as if I do it in 10k time it will have had 3 services in 15000 miles. The next stamp is at 30k. Please advise re the warranty. I'm new to this warranty malarkey as I've always bought cars that have say 80k on them so I've just serviced them as and when.

The Toyota servicing schedule is every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

So for owners who do a low mileage (less than 10,000 miles per annum), servicing should be time based, and carried out every 12 months.

For owners who do a higher mileage (10,000 miles or more per annum), servicing should be mileage based, and carried out every 10,000 miles.

In your case, your Auris' first two services were time based (although the second service would have been done early as presumably the second service was carried out before you took delivery). So, as you're using the car as a taxi, services will now be mileage based, and due at 15,000 miles, 25,000, 35,000, etc.

The Hybrid Health Check - http://www.toyota.co.uk/caring-for-your-toyota/service-and-maintenance/hybrid-health-check.json - is similarly done on either a time basis or mileage basis, whichever occurs soonest.

The Toyota new car warranty will take you up to 5 years/100,000 miles (whichever occurs first). With the service due at 95,000 miles, you will need to ensure the Hybrid Health Check is included with that service, or is done separately by a Toyota dealer before 100,000 miles occurs (current cost £39), and every 10,000 miles thereafter if you wish to keep the Hybrid Battery warranty extension in force. The Hybrid Battery Check can be renewed up to the car's 10th anniversary.
