Rav4 Cost Of Replacing Piston Rings

Hi,

I haven't been on for a while as I've had no problems until now!!

Basically I've got a 1997 Rav 4, mileage is only 85,000 so I was a bit surprised to see the occasional blast of blue smoke from the exhaust when starting!

I'm not an expert, but I did work in the motor trade many years ago and I seem to remember this is a good indicator that the piston rings are on there way out!

If anyone would give me an idea of the cost before I start getting quotes I would appreciate it!

Thanks

Piston rings are cheap, £50-£80. However, the labour is the expensive part as they will have to dismantle the whole engine. Best thing to do is to get rid of the car ASAP as the same thing happen with my on my Verso but at 140k miles.

Thanks for responding. I spoke to my local guy whose done various cars of mine!

Basically he thinks it's either the oil seals or the piston ring! Either way I'd be looking at £600 to £1500 to repair it!! Unfortunately although this is a contradiction, I can't afford to get rid of it.

There's a some good news though, he suggested I could try some Wynn's stop leak and engine cleaner...he pointed out that he doesn't use it, but he knows people who have with some success. Anyway I bought some today, so I'll have to wait and see. Bottom line, I'll have to drive it into the ground!!

A car with low mileage for it's age, yet has blue smoke!

I was fortunate to own my car at since 2003, and to prevent wear, changed the oil twice a year plus Slick 50 a couple of times during its life.

It is a difficult choice, but last year whilst looking at cars with my brother at a certain budget, some people were deluded at the condition and value of the cars, plus some had major faults! We did find a gem of a Micra which had 12000 genuine miles and cheaper than everything we searched for. His wife is now driving that.

I made the decision to repair my gearbox, than spend way more on a car whose history is not known, on my experience just mentioned.
