2004/5 Avensis T2 1.8 Noise

Got a ticking loud ticking noise coming from the engine of my Avensis Semi-Auto T2.

When driving on level road and feathering the throttle to keep speed constant (just slightly putting pressure on the throttle), you can hear the ticking noise. If I then accelearate (doesn't have to be too hard) the noise stops. It also stops if I let me foot off the accel pedal. In neutral the noise doesn't happen at any revs.

The noise is louder at higher speeds and can be heard over the radio. Its now annoying as most of the driving I do is on motorway, so I'm generally driving constant level speed without too much acceleration, just slightly (as above) pressing the accel pedal.

I have checked the oil and gear box oil and all is okay.

any ideas?

It almost sounds like something is resonating. I would consider perhaps the exhaust heat shield is vibrating. Maybe swap the auxiliary belt. Does moving the steering wheel whilst driving have any effect on the noise tone?

There was an issue with a rattling noise coming from a baffle or divider in the inlet manifold with certain Toyota engines with symptoms not unlike yours. Whether it affects you particular engine or not I don't know but you might want to take a look at the following

thanks for replying. can't say if steering makes a difference or not as difficult to do a hard steer on the motorway :-) I will try if I can when I get a chance.

The thing is, it doesn;t make the noise when out of gear and revving the engine.... I am wondering if it is gearbox related?

Thanks for the link, very useful. I have read through it and will maybe take this into consideration. However (like above)...The thing is, it doesn;t make the noise when out of gear and revving the engine.... I am wondering if it is gearbox related?

The noise may well be transmission related. I had a Jeep once that had a rattling noise under acceleration, it had hydraulic tappets and sounded just like a collapsed tappet or piston slap. I couldn't get it to make the noise when stationary no matter how hard or gently I revved it. I took it to a couple of garages for a second opinion, one said it was trim related ie something rattling in the dash or elsewhere in the trim and the other said it was the water pump and tensioner pulleys.

I eventually traced it myself, it was a loose bolt in the torque converter, got in through the access hole and found only one loose but tightened all of them just to make sure. Noise disappeared. It must have been the head of the bolt hitting the bell housing but only under acceleration when the crankshaft end float was taken up by the transmission drive.

If yours has a torque converter it could be either loose bolt(s) or the flex plate (on which the torque converter is mounted) being cracked.
