Well got my renewal quote from Elephant today, the good news is that it's dropped a fair bit to £735.00 which is excellent. However, just to make sure I wasn't being ripped off, I phoned around. Tried a few places, including Bell direct, who hit me with £1200 and Adrian Flux. The Flux representative I spoke to was quite abrupt and short with me. The final quote was.... wait for it.... £1690.00. Now I'm 26, with 1 years NCB, driving licence held for 9 years no accidents or claims, live in a safe area and park on a private drive way, there is no way my premium should be as big as this - the car is only worth £4,000! The funny thing was that I called Flux a couple of years ago when I was just 23. They quoted me £1200 back then.....so how come it has gone up do much? TBH our company have worked with them before and we got the impression that they're real rip- off merchants. Beware....

I'm not looking forward to my renewal !

I bet if u told em that u worked for a car magazine they`d give u a bargain basement quote tho!

Its all a big con with them, sayin that they are modified and high power car specialists, I dont know ne1 who has found them to be cheap.

Oh is ur car a tubby?, coz its just elephant told me they dont insure imports? :(

I hate insurance companys !

Strange, yes mine is an import and a Tubby to boot. It might be they will only insure imports if you're older than 25. Did you phone them?? Their site still clearly lists imports as part of the quote engine. I got my renewal through just fine.... I do agree with what you say about Flux they really are a group of Bast**ds!! I would insure with Cornhill (my company) but... they don;t do imports either :(. Have you tried Admiral, same company as Elephant?

They insure my N/A import. I'm 26 with 3 years NCB and it was £570 for TPFT. Thats a 1990 GT Tbar.

elephants website wont let you actually apply online for a tubby, itll tell you to call in and get a quote in the end if you selected your mr2 as a tubby. mind you nowadays it seems you cant get insured on these unless youre over 25!

<if my vocabulary was any smaller, it would be nearly as small as my genitals> im 23 :( , and its due for renewal in 5 days, shiiiit, lol, ah well i`ll phone em neways, if im already insured, they hav to offer me a renewal dont they? they cant just say ****** off u cant b insured with us nemore???...can they  ?

Posted

i hope not cos im still 21! I'm pretty sure they wont tell you to %$( off, theyd be the ones losing out afterall...

Yip...

All insurance policys changed etc sometime in April. Most places won't tuch you on a tubby now unless you're 25.

If they already insure you, I think they will still have to.

Don't know if my insurance are gonna renew my policy tho because of everything I've done to the car. Dorset woman said they might not. Surely they can't do that ?? I'll phone them start of July and see what they say. Fair enough if they said that my policy was no longer valid as soon as I had done the work. But they increased my premium etc because of the work, so surely they can insure me again ?

I'm gonna try to blag that "kit car" thing tho somewhere... anyone know somewhere tha does it ?

I want some NCB !?!?!? If I go with the MR2 through Dorset again, but want to change my car 1/2 way through, then I still won't be able to build up any !... ARGH !... lol

Hmmm, they can insure you again, but probably just don't want to. I think they have to carry out your policy for it's full term i.e. up until renewal. However, after that they can refuse renewal. It is possible that their underwriters have imposed some restriction over what they will and will not allow them to cover. It is a pain in the butt, but a reality I'm afraid. Insurace companies haven't been doing too well recently, with the bad performance of the stock market, so they are trying to save as much as they can at the moment.

If they don't offer to renew my policy I'll cry !!... lol

Sarah ( is that her name ? ) said they might not, but wasn't sure. Grrr !

fingers crossed......

if u want easy NCB mate then all u gotta do is buy a £100 banger of a ford fiesta or summin and get that insured under your name.keep it off the driveway if you can to avoid road tax and then build up your ncb on that cheaply. not to mention youll have a car then to drive while your baby is in the garage!

hold on a second...

this has got the ol' cogs working...

correct me if i'm wrong on this guys but...

fully comp insurance allows you to drive ANY car thats AT LEAST TPF&F right?

so...

if i were 2 get a fiesta (<_<) get myself fully comp on that,

then get my parents to get insured on the tubby, i'd LEGALLY be able to drive it right?

there's gotta be some catch to this, and why the heck didnt i think of it b4?

yes, the catch is your only insured Third Party.. so you bend it, you mend it...

A Flux used to be really good and cheap, I think because they are an import specialist their business has grown and grown over the last few years so now they have the business the prices can creep up. I have had nothing but trouble with them, they can't seem to get anything right, everything has to be done 2 or 3 times before they get it right. I will not be renewing with them, i'm going to Tescos who, surprisingly, also specialise in imports. ps. I have also been talked to like a piece of crap by them.

Posted

SO if you're insured fully comp, you can drive any car ??

I didn't know that !!...

Good idea about buying a banger car.. well as long as it can pass MOT etc.

Posted

well, only if your policy says so...

(some dont)

well, only if your policy says so...

(some dont)

Mine doesnt kick in till i'm 25, although it says on the cert I'm covered to drive another vehicle TPF&F**

When you at the ** it says "excludes any policy holder under the age of 25.

So you gotta be carefull!!

Posted

Yup .. over 25, drive any car TPFT ..

Posted

well im only tpf&t atm.

that clause about being 25, clever...

so is there ne1 here thats got this policy where u can drive ne other car w. tpf&t AND doesnt have the "got to be 25" clause bit. Could u let us know who ur with please?

thing is i know u can get insured on any car, even if it fails mot etc jim. cos when i got my insurance for the 2, i didnt have to produce ne other docs relating to the car...

so basically u can get a rustbucket that doesnt move, get urself fully comp'd on it, and then leave it. making sure u've declared it SORN w. the DVLA else u'l be payin road tax etc on it.

you have two options, be over 25 and fully comp, most will then allow you to drive other cars TFTF........or pay extortionate amounts to add it to your policy if your under 25.........and it would probably work out cheaper to insure another car!

AND, said car has to be insured by someone in the first place, other wise you wont be able to get tax/mot.... this is why you cant but a nova and drive skylines - mores the pitty :crybaby:

Oh yeah the original point i was thinking of: renewals, youll usually get a good renewal at our sort of stage in life (young, variying degrees of no claims etc etc). I got £990 knocked off my SX insurance in one year on the renewal :o Everyone else was still quoting 2-300 quid above it.

Just hoping the same goes for the mr2 this year

Posted

pretty much the same hting happened with tesco & the 2. at renewal i got about £900 knocked off.

mr2 can be insured fairly cheap by my parents w/o me.

i'll c what the crack is with me gettin insured on a crapper, and getting this under 25 thing added to my fully comp policy.

well that ideas gone down't swanny.

Getting quotes of £1400 from tesco (online) to get fully comp'd up on everything from the worst possible Fiesta (Insurance group 4) to new pug's, punto's etc...

what the hell is going on!!!???
