Yaris D4d Dmf

Hi guys,

I hope that you can share your thoughts over a dilemma I have.

I've fairly recently bought my dads old p1 Yaris. It's a 52 plate D4D with 83k on the clock. I'm a touch concerned about the DMF and wondered if they're generally well wearing on these? He bought the car a few years back from a friend and it's had a hard life, by the look of it. It came with a few dents, no history and a tow bar attached.

In the time my dad owned it it was flawless and has been for me too. It went through the last two MOT's with no advisories. I can't get the concern out of my head about the DMF though because of it's lack of history and tow bar. I bought it for virtually nothing (£400) from my dad for some cheap as chips motoring while I get back on my feet.

I only do about 50 miles a week at present and feel it might be worth swapping it for a petrol version?

You got a Mk1 D4D for £400?!?!?! I hate you, that's got to be the bargain of the century!

Good news is yours doesn't have a DMF!

The Mk1's can take a lot of abuse; The car is basically indestructible as long as you give it regular oil changes (Annually at the very least!) and don't drive it at slow city speeds all the time, or you'll have to clean out the throttle body now and then as the EGR port gets blocked with soot.

If you're only doing 50 miles a week that sounds like short low speed journeys to me which is not a great duty cycle for a diesel; The Mk1 D4D's can handle it better than later diesels but IMHO it'll be worth giving it a good hoon at the weekends to keep it in good shape.

On the bright side you'll probably not have to fuel the thing up for 2 months

Yeah, I know it's a mega bargain (especially with that mileage), but that's what dad's are for, right? ;)

Mmm, I rang Toyota and they confirmed that it does have a DMF based on my reg number.

It certainly runs on air though! I'm getting 50mpg just tootling about around town.

Well, the gearbox is a bit clunky, but I'm not sure if that's just what they feel like with these. I just don't have a DMF replacement budget right now.

The gearbox can get a bit notchy if the gear oil hasn't been changed regularly and the gears have been ground a bit but I wouldn't worry about it.

I seriously doubt the car has a DMF as, AFAIK they only introduced them on the 90HP D4D's in the Mk2 Yaris and if yours is a Mk1 it should have the older 74HP D4D. I know the one in mine is a single solid piece!

Even if it is tho', the 1.4D4Ds have had little to no reports of DMF problems, it mainly seems to be a problem on the bigger D4Ds like the 2.0 and 2.2, so you're safe either way :)

That makes sense regarding the oil cos it hasn't been changed for a while - I'll get on to that.

Comforting about the DMF too, which I'll now forget about and concentrate on sourcing the replacement panels for the bodywork that's been battered. Did find a minty drivers side front wing for £40 quid delivered (colour matched) on eBay. The metal skirt below the back bumper is battered and needs replacing, but I've yet to see one at a breakers.

At 83k your car is barely run in,my driving school MK 1 d-4d did 223k and was even on it's original CV joints the only weak point is brake light switches they barely last 100k !

Thanks for clarifying that. I makes me wonder how the Toyota parts centre made that mistake? I gave him my registration?

I have heard of some cars having DMF problems, but the only references I've seen to it on this Yaris forum in several years of presence is the odd thread like this where someone is panicking that they are going to be landed with a big bill. I don't remember a single report of a Yaris actually suffering a DMF failure (though do correct me if I'm wrong).

It's a car. If it's out of warranty you are at risk of a big bill for almost anything at any time. At £400 it's certainly not worth changing the car because of that risk because you'd have to spend about 10 times that to get anything less likely to fail. Drive it and service it till it breaks and then decide if it's worth repairing.

Depends who you rang TBH; A good lesson here is not all Toyota dealer franchises are equal.

Some of them are great, but some of them are !Removed! useless morons so it's always worth double-checking things.

My nearest dealer managed to order the totally wrong wing mirror for my car despite having the registration, the VIN and seeing that the car was a Mk1 Yaris with electric wing mirrors and certainly not an Aygo with manual mirrors!

Oh, there is one other thing, which I'll mention here rather than starting a new thread. There seems to be a lot of turbo whistle. Is this something to worry about? My dad said that his mechanic said it's fine and, like I say, it's been no trouble in the three years we've jointly owned it.

I guess the question is do you have any reason to distrust your mechanic's judgement? When I had mine there was audible turbo whistle but I obviously can't say if yours is excessive ,you've probably already noticed the car is not over endowed with sound proofing.I'd say follow the advice on oil changes don't thrash the internally threaded hexagons off it when cold and when the time comes sell it cheap to one of you're own kids.

Our Yaris had turbo whistle when we bought it in 2006 at 3 years old. It still has..

(annual synthetic oil and filter changes).

As has been said......Keep the oil changes on time and use a branded quality oil and you are unlikely to have major problems........(That's put the mockers on it ;) )

Might be the air filter is a bit loose or not a Toyota one; When I bought this one I noticed the turbo whistle was a lot more noticeable than my old one; It turned out someone had fitted the air filter upside down, causing a small gap. Flipped it over so the corner key was in the right place and it's just as quiet as it should be now :)

Anecdotally, the K&N flat panel filters also produce a similar effect.

That said, is it turbo whistle you're hearing? Two other things that can be mistaken for it are squeal from the aux belt (Usually only on cold damp days, also harmless) or gearbox whine (I suspect harmonics at certain loads/RPMs, also harmless).

Like I said above, my dad's mechanic said that it's definitely the turbo. I can't recall exactly, but something to do with something doing something. Is that clear enough? :D
