What Are The Typical Problems That You Would Expect With A 1998 Coroll

I was wondering if it was time to part exchange my 1998 Corolla now that it has done 130,000 miles.

I was prompted to start this thread because of the problems foxylaurabob has, see:-

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/168457-re-homing-my-mot-failure-1999-g6r/

I would be pleased to know if the problems with that Corolla, ie cat converter, cv joints, a list of rear suspension problems, and burning oil are typical for a 130,000 mile Corolla?

My Corolla has none of these problem except that at the last MOT, I had an advisory note saying "rear shock absorber has light misting of oil" for both shock absorbers. It bounces one and a half times and I cannot see any oil, but I get the impression from searching the problem on the net that it will likely fail the next MOT.

To date, other than the prescribed service items and changing oil and filter every 4.500 miles, all that I have had to do is replace the front discs, rear shoes, rear cylinders and adjacent brake pipes, sump (it has rusted through!), radiator, and the nuts securing the exhaust gas analyser. EDIT And gearbox bearing and hence clutch at 33,000 miles !

Consequently, I would be interested to know what others experience of owning an old Corolla are?

Had an 2001 Corolla 2.0 D4D. Sat in my driveway for 4 years, had lost the keys to it. Found the keys and charged Battery, started right up first time. Had a full tank of stale petrol, thought why not lol, drove it and nothing happen, old oil inside, most of it was probably dried up, still no problem. Everything seemed to work, only the bodywork was in tatty condition as it was parked under a big tree and it had gunk all over the car which wouldent come off. In the end sold it and someone who came to take it took it to Nigeria the next day! Goes to show how good these engines are and even when you neglect them, they're still loyal to you. If this was a VW or any German car, it would of refused to even start up.

Don't think what others have experienced with their old cars will but of much help as think your question really is deciding to take the plunge to get a new car.

17 year old cars are always going to have some problems sooner or later so why sit there worrying about it - just get something newer ..! :D

So your real quesion is ... what are you going to get ?? a much later 2006 model Corolla or something like the newer Auris ?

With 7 weeks before the new reg plate you have got plenty of time to decide and look around for a brand new car or , as many folk as buying new these days, there are lots of 2 - 4 year old trade ins to choose from, many with 12 months main dealer warranty.
