2008 Avensis Exhaust Blowing

Hello all. I have my avensis over a year now and love it. I have had no problems up to now and even still this is not a big problem.

My exhaust started blowing yesterday so I got underneath the car last night and found that the flange on the exhaust elbow coming from the tubo has come away from the pipe. It looks like the weld has failed.

I am just looking for a bit of a heads up before I go taking it apart and welding the flange back on .Is this a common place for the exhaust to fail? It looks solid enough except obviously for the failed weld but the flange looks to be completely in one piece as does the pipe itself. IE neither is paper thin from rust.

Is it hard to remove this section of the exhaust and will I be able to get at everything I need to from underneath? Any other tips or advice might save me a grazed knuckle or two and would be appreciated :fireman2::fox:

Oh and I have developed a rattle in the dash from what sounds like behind the speedo panel. Anybody come across this before?

Thanks all!!

If it is the 'spring loaded' connection then it's likely that two sections have bonded together. This will have caused a stress fracture beside the flange. These unions are designed to 'give' in the same way as flexi sections. Be sure to swap over the doughnut gasket if you get the chance.

The same problem occurred to my son's Corolla recently but the tube behind the flange was too corroded to consider welding.

Good luck.

Thats the exact connection. I will see can I get a new gasket while I am at it so.

Thats great thanks for the tip!
