Low Mpg And Power

Hi all a bit of advice needed.

I was out on a run today in my 05 avensis 2.0 d4d. In total I drove about 300 mile today. Most driving was motorway and free flowing national speed limit roads. The most the average mpg rose to was 43.7 mpg. I wasn't heavy footed and sat between 55 - 65 mph most of the way. Is this mpg a bit low. I have also had problems with acceleration. Beneath 2500 revs there is nothing and going up slight hills the speed drops of and I have to drop from 5th to 3rd. The egr valve has been tested and working the fuel and air filter replaced. The boost control valve was replaced. Air mass flow sensor replaced. No leaks in pipes egr and inlet manifold cleaned with throttle body housing. Could the problem be with the suction control valves. What are the symptoms of the valves failing. Any help would be appreciated. Ps no fault codes

Hi James,

There is some good information about SCV failure and replacement in D4D engines in the RAV4 forum. Provided the D4D in the RAV is identical to that in the Avensis, symptoms and cures should be identical to my mind.

Certainly sounds similar to SCV faults RAV owners have described.

Hi thanks for the replies. I had two stroke oil in the tank as I had seen that post and tried it out and only got up to 43.7 mpg. I have taken the scv out and let it sit in cleaner for a bit. Also rotated it round as seen some comments about doing that. The mpg has increased and you can feel when the scv is working or not. Question is now do I replace the scv or buy a second hand fuel injector pump. My pump has 108000 on it and I'm thinking a second hand pump may have the same mileage.

That is really low I've just done 75mpg over 370 miles from my 2.2 D4D 150 (on a motorway)

My car is on similar mileage to yours too 103k and my engine is supposed to be the one to avoid surprised you're having problems.

Why don't you try getting a terra clean done on it?

Had a terra clean done. To be honest it made no difference. Felt a bit smoother after it but that was all

I hope you get to the bottom of this and get her running properly. have you priced a scv valve from Toyota. the new one may need coding too might be worth looking into.

I have priced them on eBay. Denso ones priced at £85. I don't know if they have to be coded but think I may have seen somewhere that they don't have to be but as I say I'm not at all sure.

At 70 mph in 5th gear at 2500 revs it will not maintain the speed and in a short space the speed is down to 50 mph and having to drop into 3rd to get the pull again. Egr has been tested and cleaned. Fuel, air filter replaced. All hoses look good no obvious leaks. Air flow meter replaced. Inlet manifold cleaned. Throttle body cleaned. No codes showing. Vsv or boost control valve replaced. Glow plugs fine. Also hear a whistle from the turbo is that normal. Car seems to start fine and no long cranking times. Anyone any ideas before I have to pay Mr t £84 an hour

sorry to hear this, seems like your spending alot of money and time on this problem.

are you 100% sure the clutch is not slipping.

I would change the map sensor for a used one its located off the throttle body. you cannot miss it when you take the cover off.

if you can get a egr for £20 or even borrow one I would even try it I know you mentioned its been tested but I would try it to rule it out.

if you have a diesel specialist try and get the injectors tested then get mechanic to possibly look at turbo.

this personally the steps I would take mr T would be last resort for me.

Had it into two garages so far with no joy. Diesel specialist said he would need them out on the bench to test them and he wasn't that convinced it was injectors. Think I will try the other thing first. The diesel specialist did say that the scv valve might need reprogrammed. After speaking to Toyota they recommend getting the diagnosis done and then if it needs programmed doing it then which would cost £168 if I get it programmed and it doesn't work it's £84 then at least another £84 for it to be diagnosed. No smell from clutch no extra revs just not pulling when going up hills

Only the dealers that I know of but I will be doing my best to find one now. If anyone knows any in Belfast it would be a great help. Thanks for your advice as well. I have cleaned the maf so will try the sensor in the morning

786 all I can do is thank you. I went to clean the map sensor as you suggested. The small pipe that attaches to it was resting against it not attached. Cleaned the electrical connections put the pipe on it right took it a drive and it's driving better than ever. Not a sensor I had thought of so without your help it would of cost me more money so again thank you

I didn't mean to say clean the map but I'm glad you noticed the pipe, although I did mention this pipe on one of your old threads in post number 4 at the bottom,

when i changed my clutch we had left this off by accident and the car felt it had no boost.

I just looked at the post and know I checked it before. I just spray the connections with the electrical cleaner. Such a small pipe for the hassle lol. The scv did need replaced cause it's driving better than before. It's fixed now and I did learn a bit more about the engine and possible problems and what to look for.

was just about to write

whistling noise = cracked intercooler or similar boost leak

my guess was wrong

same symptoms

glad you got it sorted anyway

Yeah the whistle noise was beginning to worry me but turned out a nice simple fix. Cheers for the input
