the car has just passed mot and immissions, could it be the mass air flow sensor wants replacing or cleaning ,the mechanic seems to think so, I believe there are 4 sensors on the car but the expense would be extortionate, its only covered 57k miles any help advise appreciated

The sensors on your Rav are showing typical faults for age / mileage. The heater circuits will probably be open circuit. (Had three go like this on one of my previous Ravs. It will not damage anything if you do not replace them, but leaving the engine check light on could mask any other faults which arise.

Search under sensors on this forum and you will find a wealth of information and advice on checks and replacement.

It's worth having a go at cleaning the air mass sensor before considering replacement. They do get a bit grubby after a while and it is an easy job. Remove the sensor and give it a squirt with some electrical contact cleaner (Halfords sell it if there is one near you). First time I tried to clean mine I used brake cleaner but it left a residue so I'd recommend proper cleaner as above.

If necessary you can use a small soft brush (artists type thingy) and gently help the cleaner to do its work then give it another spray to clean the debris off. Just be careful - if you break any of the fine wires you will be needing a new sensor. Also make sure you let the sensor dry out completely before you re-fit.

Hope this helps.

Yes , that is what they charge. I've had 2 done several years ago with less miles than yours. Those 2 are the the top pre-cat ones. You can buy them for around £100 (or maybe less) and fit them yourself but beware of damaging the manifold. As BJB says a search on here is a good idea as it has been covered before.
