the bulb has gone on the repeater, I took it out expecting to replace a bulb but its a sealed unit, how have you guys changed the bulb, I rang my toyota dealer they advised they cannot tell me what bulb it takes and they do not sell many of the sealed units.

is the repeater a MOT failure?

If it's a sealed unit it will most likely be one or more LEDs inside it rather than a bulb. I've never taken one of these apart on a Toyota but have broken open a similar LED indicator repeater on a VW and found it had failed as it had filled up with water over time and shorted out the circuit board.

I don't know what price these are from Toyota but someone is selling them for about £25 on eBay!

Unfortunately it is an mot failure if the repeater isn't working.

Wow I really didn't expect a sealed lamp unit to have a conventional bulb inside! What an awful design.

It's a sealed lamp that has no LED inside, but an ordinary orange/amber W5W bulb; I have the same problem, I would like to swap that bulb with LEDs; probably I'll detach the lens from base with a cutter, then stick with some glue...

You can get new, smoked ones with 3 leds inside from Japan:

anyone who has carried this repair can you confirm its a amber w5w bulb? I would rather have the bulb ready before I take it apart. thanks

I don't know what Avensis has (but I have courage to bet that original bulb is W5W ordinary amber bulb :) ), but Auris has that bulb which I said before...

OK UPDATE;

the left side was not working, I had found that both sides are exactly the same, so I put the working one (right one) on the left hand side to rule out any wiring issues, the right one worked in the left connector.

so I went ahead and opened the housing, the bulb was not blown the filament was intact- any ways I went and changed the bulb I bought osram bulbs as I didn't want to do this again in a few weeks with cheap bulbs.

by the way it is a 501 amber (wy5w) it says this on the housing. so thank you Tavy.

it didn't work, I tried putting the bulb the other way, no luck

I have ordered a new turn signal lense and will update again when that comes.

Halogen bulbs will work both ways. Only LEDs need to be inserted other way in case they're not working.

Thank you guys, for this idea with cutting the lamp; today I replaced that boring amber bulbs with white LED ones. They are gorgeous now !

I think this is problematic decision my friend. Because the light will be more pointed and not as spread as with normal bulb, which means it is harder to see if the person is looking from front or back. Maybe you should've used LED strip or some 180 degree bulb...

Also it would be interesting to see the end result, I mean how it looks when it's blinking. Maybe even a short video :) And is it blinking faster than before now or did you install some resistor aswell?

There's no problem with light spreading, lens does the job very well. 120 degrees LED bulbs have been used.

No resistor required, blinking is the same because I didn't change bulbs in headlamp and tail lamp.
