Avensis D4d 1cd-ftv Engine Oil Low Level Light 2006

last night this light appeared on the dash whilst parked on a slope.

maint_Engine_low_oil_%20level_%20warning

I normally keep on top of oil etc but these two weeks have been really busy. I have checked for any leaks, everything seems dry & I have topped up the oil.

light has gone out, no smoke, engine does sound slightly better with adding a bit of oil.

question is has any damage been done? what else would cause apart from the apparent low oil?

I have a 300 mile trip on Monday just a bit worried.

my car takes just short of 6 litres 5.9, how many do i have burn/loose for this light to come on.

How much oil did you need to top it up?

about a 1 litre/ 1litre and a 1/2, I drove the car today it seems fine the oil light has not returned since.

The next question is how many miles you have done since last top up or service?

From my experience with the 1CD-FTV you could top up a litre after about 7-10k miles. So most of the time you'd be ok without topping up between each service. But then I mainly did longer distances at moderate pace. Not a lot of town driving or shorter journeys.

If it sounds and runs ok you're probably ok.

You say you where parked on a slope ,this will give you an inaccurate reading in any case, but the oil light is designed to to illuminate before critical point is reached so you will b e ok.

If you haven't done so already i would recheck on level ground with a cold engine,,as there's a possibility you may have overfilled it which is potentially worse than the oil light coming on..hth.

I should of been more clear it was parked on a slope when the light came on. once it came on it was moved onto level ground, jacked up & checked and then topped up.

the oil filter is dry so is the sump plug, the actual sump is dry too, there is no oil on side of engine. I will take top engine cover off today and check under there, is there anywhere else I could check?

I would be vary.. I had my avensis verso d4d using "a bit of oil".. 1 litre?.. and simultaneously the turbo started making a lot of noise.. turned out a gasket on an internal oilpipe caused the turbo to suck oil via the preheated air system.. result.. changing gasket, removing crackelated oil from the oilsump/filter for oilfeedpump, and.. probably need a new turbo soon.. idiotic contruction from toyota.. ther's no way of knowing this has happened unless you register the oil beeing consumed(in time) or you unscrew the oilfillcap when the engine is running an register that it lets out a lot of "oilsmoke" "did they do it on purpose"? or are they just stupid? very untoyotalike

to be honest... if these are taxi miles ;) they are not exactly easy on the car.

Stop and Start, stop and Start..

Although the car the older shape avensis 1cd-ftv has a capacity of upto 6.3L from dry.

Generally when I change the oil every 4 to 5k it takes around 6L.

Not much difference in the old mk1 to the newer mk2 2005+ you have.

However.. I am having a poke and thinking main crank seals as the older gen engines dont really eat oil.

Mine eats around 0.5L every 5k most of that "seeps" out.

@ cmia- what spec oil do you recommend on these cars its got 157,000 at the moment. I am currently using 10w40.

the right spec oil like 5w30 ?

to be honest i tend to put in 10w40 - never had any issues.

What you need to have a look at is around your gearbox to engine join can you see any black seep, and remove the driver side undercarriage and look straight up the pullies to see oil stains.

Its not a worry, just drive it.

The wife's car was the same.light flashed on then off on level ground.i done an engine flush with a good flush then used cheap oil to flush that out put in Toyota 5/30 gave it a good hard drive.hasnt went back on since.clean your intake and throttle.the pcv/turbo is sucking oil out and clogging everything up.id say there's oil in the intercooler too.

Does the 1cd-ftv have a pcv valve? Where is it located? Im only asking because my car is burning oil as well and the breather pipe is quite oily on the engine side so after some research it seems changing the pcv can help.

thanks.

It's not a pcv on these it's really called a ccv and it can't be changed its just a small pipe (from what I can describe)the small hose that runs from the air filter box towards the turbo.the pipe branches off to the left and into the top of engine.best bet is to take all off cover your turbo and intercooler pipes with cloth to stop dirt getting in.clean all the pipe work and intake egr and throttle.and dry it all off before replacement.and if you have the time do the intercooler itself.a thing I've been meaning to do.

Aah I see what you mean. Thanks for that.

Ill clean all the pipework and EGR again. Might leave the intercooler for an expert. Think its a big job for me.
