Replace Rhd Mmt Mph Speedo With Lhd Normal Km/h One

Hi to all:

I live in Malta and we get our new Toyotas from the UK market so my 2006 MMT Aygo has a mph odometer and the main markings on the dial face are MPH and Kmh (smaller). Now since a number of speed cameras are being used I find myself looking more at the speedo to make sure I'm not overspeeding. I enquired about the dial of the speedo at the local Toyota dealer and was told that Toyota does not sell them but sells the whole speedo cluster including petrol gauge etc.

Looking on eBay I found quite a lot of 2nd hand speedos for sale from all over Europe and they all have a km/h dial only and it costs quite a lot (although funnily enough it costs less than the tachometer/rev counter - unbelievable!).

My question is, if I replace the whole speedo with one from France/Germany etc. (and perform the mile/km correction) will all the sensors in the speedo work and specifically, will the gear number (R/N/1/2/3/4/5) which shows on the digital display near the petrol gauge and odometer/trip meter, be active?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The speedo head unit on an Aygo is more than just the speedo it also includes the interior relay box, fuse box and body control unit, believe it or not there are 182 variations of the speedo head assy depending on:

Speedo read out MPH with inner KMH, KMH only or KMH with inner MPH

MMT or manual

With or without VSC

Trim levels

Electrical equipment fitted

With or with out PAS

Petrol or Diesel

If it is pre equipped for Tacho

With or with out DRL

Age of car

How many airbags

With our without seatbelt warning

LHD or RHD drive

Thanks for the reply. My Aygo is from July 2006 and is a RHD Petrol Aygo+. It is equipped with:

MMT gearbox

A/C

Power assisted steering

4-speakers +tweeters

Steering+passenger airbags

Side airbags in seats

Speedo has Miles (large number up to 110Mph) and Kilometres (small number) and is pre equipped for tacho on both sides (mickey-mouse effect). The LCD display shows: fuel gauge, present gear position N/R/1/2/3/4/5, trip and odometer in MPH

I think it also has VSC

Remote central locking

Front electric windows

Engine immobiliser

ISOFIX

No front fog lamps.

Phew! I think that's all

So in all probability, the LCD display in a manual car is different as it does not show the gear position. Therefore, I will only be able to use the dial's face if I want to see Kmh as the main speed indication.

have you ever thought of one of these head up displays

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-GARMIN-HUD-HEAD-UP-DISPLAY-ADVANCE-NAVIGATION-PROJECTION-010-12024-04-/161742674237?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25a89d593d

you can get cheaper models, they just plug into your obd2 port ,thats it there fitted and working

Saw these as well but with that price, I could buy the whole speedo from my Toyota dealer. Also, with the amount of sun glare we get especially from May to October, I think that the display will be quite hard to read apart from the obvious "stealability" of the equipment.
