2006 Yaris Wont Start Intermittently

Bit of a strange one, My brother has a 2006 Yaris 1 litre, 3 cylinder engine, manual gearbox which he bought due to me bragging about how reliable mine is.

Anyhow, the car will start sometimes 1st turn when cold, then drive it and leave it and when he comes back a few hours later, all the lights are lit on the dashboard but it just clicks. He assures me that the clutch was fully depressed. He tried jump leads on it and it then started no problem. Battery???

Then he tells me that the next time he went to start it, it sounded like the starter motor was turning continuously even though the key had returned to the run position.

Has anyone ever come accross this before? Any problems with starter motors or starter relays?

Any help might save me a bit of abuse the next time i see him.
