59 Reg Rav4 2ad Diesel Engine Issues

Hello all

I'm a regular reader of the forum but first time posting!

I have a 59 reg Rav 4, 110,000 miles, currently off the road due to coolant water being blown out of the expansion tank and having to be constantly topped up. An independent garage and Toyota have confirmed that this is caused by a head gasket failure due to carbon deposits and that it will require a 3/4 engine replacement.

I've read Charliefarlies guide regarding the extended goodwill warranty however this only covers cars produced up to December 2008. Toyota have confirmed that my car is outside this warranty, despite it having developed the same problem requiring the same fix. They clearly believe that the problem has been fixed for engines produced after January 2009.

My experience, however, suggests that the problem is far from fixed and I'm just curious to know if anyone else has had similar issues with a 2Ad diesel engine produced from 2009 onwards.

That doesn't sound quite right ... your car falls within the 7 years and 112,000 miles so should be covered provided that the engine itself is covered. The fact that your car wasn't registered until late 2009 doesn't mean that the engine wasn't one of the last of the series produced in 2008 that had this problem.

What can you tell us about the specification of the engine? My suspicion is that if it is either a 138/140 bhp 2AD or the 177/180 2AD within a run-out 4.3 it really should be covered. If it's a 150 bhp engine within the facelift model (4.3.5) the problem shouldn't have occurred in the first place ...

Hi, thank you for replying. It is in fact the 150Bhp and Toyota are adamant that it is not covered. Just wondered if anyone else had had any issues!

Oh dear ...

The bulletin referred to in Charlie's thread applies only to the earlier engines - it doesn't cover the 150 bhp version in your (and my) car because that is a post-fix engine. So to that extent I fear your garage is correct.

However, if the fixed version of the engine is exhibiting the self same symptoms there may well be a case for Toyota to show a little more 'good will' and issue a new bulletin. I suspect that may be the next approach to try.

I'm no 'expert' but haven't heard of many, if any, confirmed cases of this problem on the newer engine but as you say it is worth asking the question ...

The previous engines that had the 3/4 engines fitted due to the problems. Would they still be covered? The reason

I'm asking is a friend has bought a 57 plate T180 and had the original replaced in 2008. His done just under 30K miles with the new engine even though the car would not be under warranty is the engine still covered. After the last service he was told that his head gasket needs replacing. It's services independently but Toyota parts used. He spoke to Toyota UK and they have said no but I would've thought it should be covered. Just wandering if anyone else had a similar issue

An engine replaced in 2008 would NOT benefit from the 7 year 112K Goodwill

The problems with carbon stamping on early models was fixed in 2009, later models do not suffer from the same issue. That is not to say a head gasket cannot fail on a later model

2009> do not have the 7 year goodwill warranty and is not applicable

So basically if any engine is replaced by Toyota it's not given any warranty? I think the article by Charlie says he had his replaced twice

Thanks parts-king I'm aware that the warranty does not apply to my 2009 car. My question was really aimed at owners of >2009 models to see if anyone else had experienced the same problems with carbon deposits, coolant spray etc.

I keep being told that later models do not suffer from the carbon deposit issue however my 2009 car has just developed exactly the same problem as described in the technical service bulletin, same symptoms, same diagnosis, same fix.

So similar in fact that the Toyota garage originally agreed to replace the engine under the terms of the goodwill warranty. They kept the car for 4 days before calling me to let me know that the engine number wasnt actually covered by the extended warranty.

The thread also states that the dealer rebuilt engines weren't always successful in curing the issue, which is why Toyota progressed to factory built engines. It is possible that the original engine in Charlie's was rebuilt by a dealer, and later replaced by a factory rebuild.

Why should the factory built engines continue to be covered by the 7 year goodwill measure if they addressed the issues with the original engines??

iirc the rebuilt/replaced engines had a 1 year warranty
