New Avensis Owner - A Couple Of Questions...

Hi guys,

I just took possession of my new, shiny Avensis Estate. It's a 2010 2.0 D4D TR...really happy with it, but I have a couple of questions I'm not sure about:

1) It's telling me that my average speed is about 17mph...I'm not sure that's accurate. Is it faulty, or does it need resetting somehow?

2) How does it work out the average mpg? At the moment it's around 35mpg and climbing VERY slowly. Does it work out over the course of a tank of diesel or, again, should it be reset somehow?

3) This is my first car with an electronic parking brake, so a little unsure about something. I noticed that, if I pull away when the brake is engaged, then it disengages allowing me to drive. It that how it's designed, or am I causing damaged to the brake by not disengaging it myself manually before pulling away.

Basic questions, I know, but I appreciate your responses.

Thanks

Hi Mike, welcome :)

1 - reset (hold down the button on the steering wheel until it resets that particular screen).

2 - it averages mpg since it was last reset (reset as above)

3 - you must have a manual as afaik the CVT doesn't do that. It's by design but also afaik it's harder on the pads & discs than releasing manually & then pulling away

Just to add to Heidfirst's excellent advice...

The auto release handbrake function can be switched off. I read instructions somewhere (maybe in the owners manual, or maybe on here), IIRC it's quite straight forward process like holding the handbrake button to "on" for 10 secs or something.

Edit... The auto release handbrake needs both the accelerator pedal depressed and the clutch let out. ie it doesn't release by ONLY letting the clutch out. Using it will put a bit more wear on the clutch.

Hey Heidfirst, thanks for the help...the reset works! With regards to the handbrake, the intention is to get used to having an electronic one, which takes a bit of instinct-change..so hopefully won't be an issue in the future.

'alan333'..cheers! Not sure I'll disable it just yet, as I think it'll dig us out of a hole or two for hillstarts, etc at the moment.

the epb takes longer to release than a manual handbrake (you'll hear the actuator) so you either have to anticipate lights changing & release early, hold it on the clutch rather than using the epb (not recommended imo) or just accept that you aren't going to get instantly away from the lights when they change.
