Timing Belt Change & W.pump.. 97 Corolla 4afe. 1.6 London Uk

Just some info for all. Just come off the phone. Toyota have just told me this...

On all model Toyotas the Timing Belt Recommended change is:

10 YEARS OR 100,000 Miles!

My Car, which was my Dads...I see had it's belt changed in 2002, 5 years old, at 52,000 miles...by...surprise surprise...TOYOTA.

Toyota DO NOT change the tensioner, or pulleys as a matter of course. They normally just fit the belt. They inspect the pulleys and tensioner.

Just parts price, not fitted...

A tensioner is £127.81 inc vat.

A water pump is £105 inc vat.

Confirmed by Toyota...1997/8 Corolla 4AFE Engine is NON Interference.

The Water Pump is NOT driven by timing Belt, so it is not prudent to change it at belt change, unless it's knackered. It can be done as an individual job not requiring T Belt removal.

I'm no Toyota specialist, but those figures look questionable to me.

All my old Carina,Avensis and Corolla manuals say timing belts should be renewed at 60,000 MILES ( aka 100,000 KMtrs ..?) or 6 years.

10 years and 100,000 Miles sound more like a Timing chain rather than belt.

Agree, about the tensions and pulley/s ( if fitted) the local Toyota service dept told me long ago they never replace either as they had never found one worn, but they do check every time for any signs of wear.

Ran my 4AFE Avensis to over 150,000 + miles with only belt changes.

Plenty of other suppliers of water pumps for a fraction of that price, like £25, if you shop around.

You're quite right Old codger. Toyota service dept, not parts, have just confirmed 60k miles or 6 yrs.

The cost for replacing the Timing belt...sit down please...£289. I kid you not, Incs the belt, but not the tensioner, which is + £128.

A water pump change is £123 or £185 depending on which pump, sealant or gasket...plus the water pump at £105, + £30 coolant.

It has taken 6 calls over a week to squeeze these prices out of them. Getting through to Toyota service Kingston, London is a nightmare. They have failed to call me back on every occasion.

Recession? Really. Anyway, see my other post, just had the timing belt/tensioner and 3 aux belts done for £242 inc. If i'd bought the parts myself ( they are next door to a eurocarparts) I would have saved another £40.

Thanks for your reply. Shimmy

I did the wife's car at the weekend with genuine Toyota parts i only put the belt on, never needed to replace the water pump but thats me this is her 3rd belt. Parts where

Belt = £39.00

top roller = £88.06

bottom roller = £77.26

tensioner = £80.73

above prices are not including vat.

I have never needed to replace any thing other than the timing belt, and i do it at 50k intervals. Hope this helps.
