Hello all

I have a 2005 Corolla D4D MMT E12T with 258,000km. Lately it has been giving me problems with the MMT going into neutral. On 3 seperate occassion when refilling fuel it would not come out of Neutral. Gear selector moved but never engaged. Had to shut off and restart several times to finally put it in gear.

Today while driving, when coming to a stop at ped crossing in slow and heavy city traffic, it shifted from 1st to neutral and wouldn't go back into gear. Had to push out of the way and cycle start/stop until finally went into 1st. Drove 5 more minutes and again coming to a stop a crossing it did the same. Followed same procedure and finally went into 1st. This time drove it in manual mode and was able to get out of city fine. Drove it 30 km's and once at home I tested the automatic gears and worked fine.

I see alot of people are having this problem in the UK but I have found no fix or solution besides going to Toyota and them replacing everything usch as actuator, ECU and what not.. In Spain, back in 2010 we had a recall for problems with the MMT and some parts where replaced.

Anyone have any information as to what is causing the MMT to shift to neutral and not back into gear, fixes or anything info at all?

Thanks

It could ne the Shift Lock Solenoid that's malfunctioning. To troubleshoot the MMT properly you might need to go to a dealer.

Unfortunately in Spain, my local dealers are not as good as they probably are in the UK. I remember when I first purchased the vehicle, the technician didn't even know if it had ISOFIX. So they are not very well trained. When I took the car in for the MMT recall, they gave the car back unaligned, crooked steering wheel, windows not functioning, radio stations erased etc. etc.

Anyway, I believe the shift lock solenoid would only prevent the shift mechanism from moving. I wouldn't think it would come in play once driving. This taking the tech theory I have as a trained VW tech. VW automatics at times had the problem that you could not move the shift selector, and either the brake light switch or the solenoid you mention had to be replaced because it would not unlock when depressing the brake pedal.

But with this MMT system, who knows! Not much info out there, that I can find.

Is there any tech resources online?

I think you're right that it's not the shift lock solenoid, I misunderstood your original post. It cold possibly be the Shift Lock Position Sensor which would give the symptoms you mention but then again it could be something else entirely. Are you getting the transmission warning light flashing? Have you had anyone read the car for fault codes or is that one of the problems you're having in Spain? There's a ton of documents available on-line but not a lot in diagnostic procedures; don't know if you've seen the attached but any info is better than no info.

You might also want to have a look at the following thread even though it's not Corolla.
