Newbie And Another Spare Key Saga

Hello.

We are in our first week of owning our 2008 Prius. So far we are very impressed. However, like many second-hand cars, only one key fob was provided by the dealer. The second key had apparently been lost by the one previous owner. It is the two button fob, with a black logo.

After spending many happy hours reading posts on this site and others, I decided to try and buy a second-hand fob and reprogram it, even though half the world seems to believe it to be impossible. A fob was purchased from a dealer on eBay who seemed to specialise in auto fobs/keys and offered a money back return policy.

It arrived promptly and I set about trying to program it. Despite trying carefully to follow each step, it failed to work on the first two occasions. Further reading on the internet followed and I found this note tucked away in the text

"Also a BIG thing: Have only the old remote and new or USED remote in the car. No Cell or Phone or Blue Tooth"

Now it may be a coincidence but leaving the mobile phone indoors did the trick. I worked through both the immobiliser sequence and the door lock/unlock without any problem. Now we have two working key fobs for the car.

My remaining problem is with the emergency blade key built into the fob. A blank one can be purchased on good old eBay, but where do I go to have it cut to match the original key?

Many thanks for reading this and helping if you can.

How much did the spare cost out of interest?

Hi Jonathan.

The replacement fob was £49.50 inc postage. It was important to me to buy from an Ebayer with clear experience in this type of product, together with a high feedback and who would accept returns.

It looks like the blade blank will be under £3, plus the cost of cutting it.
