Glut Of Problems Means My Aygo's Booked In To The Dealer :-(

After a lot of experimentation with securing, and then removing my spare-wheel along with everything else in the boot (including the carpet) I've come to the conclusion that my ’64 plate X-Clusive really does have a clonk from the NSR suspension which Toyota are going to investigate even though my car isn't on their rear-shock recall-list.

My starting lethargy problem (once it wouldn't start at all, and it's been slow to start on another dozen occasions) have now developed into a hesitancy at light throttle openings for the first five minutes of most journeys which is really grating, and smacks of fuel-vaporisation issues.

I’m not confident the service-team will be able to diagnose what are intermittent “faults” during a brief test drive, but hopefully I’m mistaken and all will be resolved next Tuesday!

So, the reason for my post, I know the rear-shocks can be suspect, but has anyone else experienced starting or hesitancy issues with a '64 Aygo?

What is the rear shock recall list. havent heard of this?

There's another thread about rear shocks knocking, but I can only find a 2013 front-shock recall notice online. When I mentioned my rear-shock knock to my dealer service department, they stated that my car wasn't within the recall range but I'm unsure whether that's the opriginal front-shock recall or a subsequent rear-shock recall. We shall see what they say after the test drive.

My 15 plate X-Pression usually starts on the button as it were. Occasionally, very occasionally, the engine turns 3 or 4 times and a somewhat hesitant start ensues. The car is fine thereafter and drives normally. I wish I could say under what circumstances this odd behaviour occurs but it seems almost random. I though the extremely hot weather was a likely culprit as the car has been as hot as Hades a couple of times as I get into it after work - and a couple of time it hesitated, sometimes not, but has NEVER failed to start.

Cheap supermarket petrol is a regular cause of vaporisation issues ( I am led to believe). I have never put anything other than Salisburys petrol in it - so short of changing to BP, Texaco etc to see if it makes a difference I may never know. I live 1/2 mile form a big Sainsburys and just always use it. Its never been enough of a problem to make me drive the other side of town to find a BP.

i am currently deciding if i have a problem or its because its "normal" for a 3 cylinder engine.

i have no problem starting, i have only done around 600 miles since march, so doesnt get used for several weeks at a time, but always starts first time.

i do notice an issue that starts at around 2000 rpm going upto 3000rpm that feels like its hitting the limiter (would normally say"running on 3 cylinders"). like the engine is holding back, doesnt matter what gear i'm in.

is that similar or does anyone have any ideas, before i book mine in too

Well my visit to the deal was a bit of a waste of time! Four hours of my life wasted.

They weren't at all interested in my list of dates/times/temperatures that the car was slow to start, and as they couldn't replicate it in the workshop there was nothing they could do.

The hesitancy/missing which I'd tracked-down to light throttle openings at 1,800-2,400 rpm was put down to "The Aygo isn't a powerful car sir, perhaps you were in an inappropriate gear?" - yes, I realise that, I've owned four of them over the last eight years and can assure you that the "missing" isn't at all normal. I've tried my regular supermarket brew, and lately have fed the Aygo some Esso and Harvest fuel too, but the hesitancy/missing is still there so I don't think it's fuel-quality related. I can't help but think the starting lethargy and missing are somehow related, so sort of fuel starvation issue.

As for the rear shock clonk, yes they could hear a "rattle" (not what I'd call it, it was definitely a clonk) but couldn't track it down and would require the car for a whole day to investigate further.

It's interesting that mrrusty is reporting a similar issue to my hesitancy/missing - I like your "running on 3 cylinders" analogy, that's exactly how mine feels and at a similar rpm too so perhaps there's a common fault?

DarkMatter's starting hesitancy sounds similar to my problem too, to put it into perspective, with daily use I've experienced starting lethargy thirteen times in three months, sometimes when the engine is cold, sometimes warm, and at ambient temperatures of 14 to 24C. It's not really worth grumbling about on its own, but coupled with the other issues I'd rather it was sorted.

We shall see what the next visit to the dealer brings! I shan't be holding my breath.
