So much for 'oh the batteries will cost loads to change'. I think even if a big bill happened tomorrow he's still had his moneys worth, not that I can see it being likely.

A family friend with a doctorate in engineering asked me if we leased the batteries in our Prius. When I said, no, of course we don't (it's not some cruddy French leccy car, after all), he looked very concerned and tried to claim we were in for some massive bills when it goes wrong. Yeah...right... :)

Maybe we are in for a massive bill, when it goes wrong................... but they don't go wrong.

I think one mis-conception is that it is one huge Battery, when in fact it is many cells (~130 IIRC), so if a cell goes bad, you don't actually replace the whole thing anyway.

On the cars where you rent the pack however, they might insist on changing the whole thing, which is perhaps where this idea is coming from.

Under warranty maybe, however specialists can do individual cells as far as I'm aware.

Lots about Prius Battery replacement online, although a 54 plate on has just hit 435k miles on its original traction Battery, so I really wouldn't worry about it.
