Eco Mode Vs. Normal

Hi,

Waiting for my car to arrive, and had a question about Eco Mode vs. Normal mode.

Maybe this is covered in the handbook (I'm impatient!), but what is the difference between Eco Mode and Normal mode? I understand it reduces the sensitivity of the throttle to help reduce acceleration rate and thus power/fuel consumption, but does it do anything else or is that it?

Electronic copies of the user manuals for the vehicles can be obtained here:

US: http://www.toyota.com/owners/resources/owners-manuals

UK: https://www.toyota.co.uk/tme#/my-toyota/eManual

Very useful! :D

Hey,

You are going to love it :) I just got mine 4 days ago.

Here in Denmark my model is called H2 + Comfort Package and Safety Sense.

Eco vs. Normal ..

Eco changes the aircon function so that it'll always use recirculated air (I think, I'd love if that could be default in normal mode as well) and makes the "gas"pedal response slower. I think thats about it.

I've not used Eco yet..

As above, it'll recirculate air when viable, not all of the time however.

As above, but you can switch recirculate off if you wish.

I dug into the manual, and it says that it "restricts" the aircon system operation, so I guess that means it doesn't get quite as cold or quite as hot, and tries to limit fan speed, in order to conserve energy.

I've never had a vehicle with climate control before, but I guess that LO means it will just try for "cold as possible", whilst the lowest settable temperature will result in it regulating temperature?

From experience it's only fan speed that it restricts, and only on cold warm up or when engine is below a certain temp, to prevent too much thermal energy being withdrawn from the block when it's cold outside and you're wanting heat.

Doesn't seem to make any difference if there is no heat required in the cabin. Ie in the summer with AC on.

Hmm interesting!

Is the ICE required for aircon/heating then? These are not electrical-only systems?

Heating yes as it draws the heat from the engines coolant system like any other car heater does. Ventilation without heat doesn't require ICE however if the traction Battery has adequate charge in it as its all Electric.

What about the aircon side (specifically cooling)? Is this a conventional system too, or does it use a peltier device?

AC is fully electric also. Only hybrid this isn't the case with is the mk1 Prius.

Eco mode is only good for town driving as it makes accelerator pedal too hard and driving on A roads or Motorways becomes uncomfortable unless cruise control been used all the times.
