Spoiler And Window Tinting

Hello,

I have just recently bought my yaris and thinking of adding a small spoiler to the rear and tinting the rear windows. Looking around online I'm not too sure whether to try to do the tiniting myself by one of these eBay kits or get a local specialist to do it. Has anyone done it themselves?

Also can I have any advice with a spoiler? Really struggling with finding much on Google with yaris spoilers and not really sure who I would need to go to ask? What price should I expect to pay?

Also quite interested in doing the same to my Yaris, I like the look of the trend model with the tinted back and spoiler. Not bit the bullet in purchasing any kits for the tints yet. My Yaris is white, i have an idea of adding a black spoiler rather than white for a bit of contrast.

Why would you want to add a spoiler?

I remember a neighbour fitting one to the back of his Sierra (at considerable expense). When we did some investigation, we found it added about as much downforce as if it had been put inside the car, increased drag and hence used more fuel. A couple of bags of sugar in the boot would have been more effective!

It makes me smile when I see folk modify cars. It's as if the manufacturer waste millions of pounds on research and development for no reason.

Yeah i see where your coming from, it's more of a look than anything i guess with such a small car. I want to do very subtle mods, nothing extravagant as i like the look of the car as it is, mines is 1.33 2012 model without tints/spolier/fogs. I wonder what the percentage tint is on the trend models.

The tinted windows will be around 15% and the fronts will be around 50-55%. The law limit is 50% on the front 3 windows and no lower.

Manufacturers normally make them as dark as they're allowed.

I've never had any luck with the DIY kits and always have my windows done professionally. When I was younger and wreckless I used to have the rears at 15% and the fronts at 40% as it just decreases the contrast between dark and light and you can still normally get away with it as the fronts still look lighter.

You can't beat that look..

UK regulations on window tinting don't quote the percentage level of tinting allowable - instead they quote the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) percentage.

For example:

"The Regulation states 70% of visible light must pass through the front side windows and 75% through the windscreen.

Many people misunderstand the regulation and presume that 70% allows a 30% tint. It doesn't!

Glass does not let in 100% of light. Clear glass only allows approximately 86% of light to pass , and the slight tint of standard manufactured glass varies from the 70% maximum limit up to approx 80% of light passing through.

Thus any tinted film being applied to the front windows will drop the light transmissions to below the regulation limit."

What I meant was, when you go to the guys that do the tinting, their film is graded in percentages and 'their 50%' is the legal limit that they can apply to front windows for road use. There is no lower limit for the rears.
