Uphill Torque Missing

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a toyota auris 2010 1.3l 50000 km however i've been having some issues with performance whenever i drive uphill, when i'm going up a slope >5% my max speed is 80km/h (50mph), and i cannot accelerate anymore from that point on, the rpm just doesn't go any higher.

I've tried shifting gears at higher rpm, staying in 3rd gear, but the speed just won't move, i have no problems accelerating on flat or downhill,

Is this normal for my model(read an article saying to stay off motorways with an auris 1.3l), or do i have a problem?

Thank you.

I've had two Auris 1.33's (a 2009 and a 2012). We've used both for holidays including journeys to the Isle of Skye each year - two adults, rear seats folded down and a full load of luggage. Each 500+ mile journey involves around 300 miles of motorways, and both cars coped well at speeds up to and over the legal maximum (70mph).

An incline usually means changing down from 6th to 5th, but the cars haven't presented any issue with this nor keeping up with the rest of the motorway traffic.

Going through the mountainous areas of the Scottish Highlands and through the Cuillins (a range of mountains on Skye), again, doesn't present a problem.

Would suggest that maybe you do have an issue with your Auris, or are leaving it too late to change down a gear.

If you ever go up around Skye you'll not want to drive too fast otherwise you might miss the scenery.

This is on the mainland near the Kyles of Lochalsh.

True - though we tend to go along The Road to the Isles, and travel from Mallaig to Armadale by ferry. Occasionally one will see The Jacobite steam train wending its way along the Mallaig to Fort William line. A sight it to behold if one can see it on the Glenfinnan viaduct
