I recently purchased a 2006 Corolla and it seems to mileage on the odometer has been tampered with. Its been set 20k miles lower than it is. I want to correct the mileage and increase it back to the correct reading as per the latest service record. Dealers are not willing to do it as it is illegal.

Question is, does anyone know where the mileage is stored? is it on the ECU or is it in a chip on the actual instrument cluster?

Has it been tampered with or has it has a replacement?

seems like it was replaced with a lower mileage cluster

Usually there is a note made in the service book where an odometer has been replaced, and that should be sufficient evidence to support the mileage discrepancy.

Would assume it was replaced by the previous owner rather than a Toyota dealer ?

If a Dealer had replaced it and put a note in the service book, surely they could have corrected the mileage ?

What will happen at the next mot when they see the negative mileage difference if there is no dealer confirmation of replacement ?

As the OP implies its more likely been 'clocked' but if he has a recent Toyota Service stamp showing the higher mileage and the last mot certificate showing the last few annual readings that match up, then surely using one of the online "mileage adjustment services" would not be wrong ??

A dealer won't correct the odometer as that is that the same as clocking.

In the service books of our current Auris and our Hyundai i20 there is provision for the recording of a replacement odometer which shows the installation date and the mileage at installation.

John your main dealer is right not to touch the odometer and neither should any right thinking person. As for your problem get intouch with the DVLA and let them know about the discrepency they will be able to advise you better.
