Front Passenger Door Won't Open On Prius

On my 2008 Prius the front passenger door won't open. I phoned my local Toyota repair centre who said it's likely to be the actuator in the door.

To fix this would require a new interior door panel to be installed which would cost £500, then approx £200 on top for labour and the new part ... so approx £700 in total.

Is this the normal procedure to fix a door that won't open?

Can't the existing door panel be put back after replacing the actuator?

Please let me know if you think this is a fair assessment!

Thanks

Andrew

Hello Andy - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Did they say why the interior door panel would need to be replaced?

Suppose it depends whether the interior door panel can be removed when the door is closed - if they have to damage the panel to gain access to the actuator, that may be the reason.

As above I suspect they'll need to smash their way in.

I would first try lubricating the lock then trying to deadlock and unlock multiple times - if you're lucky the lock might just undeadlock.

On mine the plastic worm drive inside the lock failed intermittently, so probably that,

They probably can't lever the door card off with it closed, so a case of cutting it off.

You could probably get a door card from eBay or a breaker.

A used lock is about £40 off eBay, and there are quite a few on there.

Can you hear any noise when trying to unlock?

Could be worth warming the general area of the door with a hair dryer (if you can get a lead to your car), sometimes a little hear will loosen things up (please don't torch anything though!) Worth a try
