Rav4 Drive Belt

MGPA

Recommended Posts

Rav4, produced oct 2006, 148000miles. Mostly little town driving (30 miles trip each way to work)

All started a couple of days ago with a whining sound from around the drive helt area. Suspected the belt or waterpump. After a couple of short trips it would not start.....needed jumpstart.

Suspect 1) The drive helt is probably never replaced, but does not appear worn!

Suspect 2) alternator......but would this give a whining sound?

Suspect 3) waterpump, in combo with slipning drivebelt, no visible leakage.

Tips anybody?, start with the belt?, then? Should alternator last longer?

Discovered something stränge in the process..... According to haynes there are 2 possible helt routing...., prior to 2006 there was a servo steering pump with 6 pulleys in total, and 2006 onwards än electric servo, only 5 pulleys & shorter belt run.......

According to produktion date, handbook, & toyota I have än el servo......but the belt appears to have 6 pulleys with än empty pulley where the pump should be! Is this usual?

Thankfull for any tips!

Myles

Hi Myles,welcome to the club.

If you still cannot start it without connection to another Battery this may need changing. A good Battery supplier can, if you can drive it to them, connect it to a tester which will tell them if you have a duff Battery or one that is just run down and also if the alternator is OK

Do you have a multimeter? If so set it on DC volt range that covers 15 to 20ish volts and connect to the battery and with the engine running should show a reading of 13 1/2 to 14 volts if the alternator is doing what it should

A fault water pump will leak if worn

Drive belt will be what is known as a multi V and if worn the top face will have ridges on it

On mine there is a belt tensioner which is just a pulley which is spring loaded

Is yours a petrol or diesel, a little more detail to your profile will help members who usually will only too glad to try to help with any problems when they can

Again welcome matie
