I normally find when belts squeal its the tensioner that's the culprit. first you need to find where the noise is coming from.

I have not worked on that particular engine so I am unable to advise how its removed.

when removing its best to draw a small sketch of the way the belt goes before you take it off

here is a diagram that I have found for your engine

this is a good video

I haven't changed a belt on that engine but if it's the same as the 1.8 petrol then it's a spring loaded tensioner. You hold the tension off with a socket on a big nut. Took about 2 mins.

hi thank you for your help & tips ,i took off the cowling but cannot see any nut to ease the tensioner, thank you

for the pulley layout diagram,it is the same as mine.It squels when you rev over 2000rpm.if i could find a

way to release the tensioner it looks a fairly straightforward job. space is very limited on the d4d 2.0 engine.

I would be grateful if any body can enlighten me how to release the tension or where the nut is.

thanking you

Gerry

Looking at images on eBay the 'nut' on your tensioner is the protrusion on the spindle. It appears to be sprung off-centre so applying leverage pivots the pulley wheel away from the belt.

Hi Chaps,

Will this diagram/process apply to the 2.2 engine too? I'm about to embark on replacement and it'd be useful to know before I set out that it's just a case of the usual grazed knuckles and swearing for an hour as you get the belt in to place and then getting a long spanner on the tensioner to prise it back and slip the belt over.

(Mines a 2009 2.2)

Thanks

Gary

Hi all.

i have put on a new fan belt ,tensioner & idler, the whistle is still there, dont know where to go from there. remove the plastic cover ,you can access the tensioner nut 22mm from top.I removed front wheel & plastic to get at flywheel pulley.i removed engine mounting to replace idler &tensioner. no special tools required 14mm,17mm,&19mmsockets.It is fairly straightforward job.I would be most grateful if anybody had a similar noise .

thank you
