Limp Mode Help

Hello all, just looking for any info or advice.

My wife was driving her 2003 1.3 Yaris auto yesterday when as she started going up a hill it lost all power and would not accelerate beyond 19 mph.

Then after a minute or two all the lights came on the dashboard and the mileage said she was doing 155 mph?? At this point the brakes also wouldn't work for a second or two.The air con and her sat nav (which was plugged into the cigar lighter) also stopped.

She pulled over and called her dad to help and when he arrived he managed to drive the car the 5 miles home and it drove normally again. I drove it last night again and all seemed ok.

The problem is that my wife only passed her test a few weeks back and has now lost all confidence and is afraid to drive it. Does what happened to the car make sense to anyone at all? Don't know whether to book it in somewhere and be laughed at because all seems well now or if it is a problem that may reoccur at any time?

Just at a loss to explain it.

If it went into limp mode it should store the fault code which caused it. You could try a cheap code reader but beware sometimes they can't access the car computer "deep enough", so IMHO you'd be better having a decent auto spark hook it up to their equipment and take it from there.

The brakes shouldn't stop working, but if the engine isn't running you'd need more pressure on the pedal once the vacuum in the sytem had been used. For a novice driver this could feel like the brakes aren't working.

Since some electrical stuff stopped working it would also be worthwhile having a look around the wiring, looking for a corroded terminal or something. Especially check where the negative Battery lead goes on to the chassis, I'm not aware of a specific issue with your particular car but it's not uncommon for that terminal to get rusty.

My 2007 Yaris had some issue with the coils I replaced and drove for a week and went into limp mode , I went and check and the spark plugs needed replacing, I replaced but can’t get it to reset the computer, Is still on limp mode how can the computer be reset so it drives normal again?

Scan the vehicle for codes and report back, it sounds like the original fault has not been rectified.

Hi there, I have a Yaris 4d4 Diesel 2002 and its been a brilliant car up until it began going into limp mode. It started happening once or twice and then finally every few hundred yards, I went online to find a cure and luckily was led to a sight that explained that it could be the Sensor below the excellerator pedal, I popped to my local garage, £100 later!! seemed fixed but immediately once I was on the road it went into limp mode again, I decided to  follow the instructions of removing the sensor behind the excellerator gave it a clean, and hey presto no problems since. I am a female and not a mechanic at all, but this was a simple task that required just a 7mm Spanner and some WD40. So if your Yaris is Limping around give it a try. hope this helps

Did the 'check engine' light come on at all? Does it even work?

Sorry but some time ago I discussed cleaning my accelerator pedal sensor but did not give the name of the site which I got the information from.

It may be helpful to others have are experiencing the same issues:
